MANILA, Philippines - When life gives you haters, create a statement song that would make them cringe.
International singing sensation Charice and "The Voice" Fil-Am semi-finalist Cheesa Laureta did just that with their powerful collaboration, "I'm Not Perfect," an inspirational R&B ballad that encourages victims of bullying to believe in themselves despite being let down by others. It likewise serves as a call for bullies to change for the better.
Cheesa herself wrote the song with her brother Troy, Charice's musical director.
The almost five-minute digital single, released last Sept. 6, is close to Charice and Cheesa's heart, as both of them admit to have been bullied.
"Not only was I bullied when I was little, it came out again throughout the show ('The Voice') through social media," Cheesa told "Balitang America" recently.
Charice, meanwhile, first experienced bullying at the age of seven. The influx of haters didn't stop even as she broke through the international scene.
"Minsan grabe talaga ang ginagawa ng mga tao sa akin, sa amin. Nasasaktan ako kasi, kumbaga, parang gusto ko lang din sabihin sa kanila na, 'Kung sasabihin ko sa'yo, kung ibabalik ko lahat sa ‘yo yung mga sinasabi mo sa'kin, gusto kong ma-feel mo ‘yung nafi-feel ko.' But, at the same time, I don’t wanna do that. Kasi gusto kong ma-realize nila sa sarili nila," she related at length.
The young singers will perform "I'm Not Perfect" in a benefit show in Hawaii next month, the proceeds of which will go to ABS-CBN Foundation's Bantay Bata, added the "Balitang America" report.

MANILA, Philippines – Hit maker David Foster will not produce songs for his protégé and goddaughter Charice starting December now that he is with another record label.
David, who ended his 26-year stint with Warner Music last Sept. 30, was quoted as saying by PEP during the press conference held on Oct. 24, “December 1st will be my first day with Universal Records. Come December 1st, I won't be able to produce for Charice anymore because I can't take her with me.
“She's staying at Warner and I'm going to Universal [Records],” he explained.
However, the acclaimed music producer assured that he would continue to perform on stage with Charice.
“As for touring, I hope for many, many years we will always tour together [as long as] she has the time. She tours on her own,” he said, adding, “I love having her and she loves being with me and that's not going to change.”
Charice’s mother Racquel Pempengco likewise clarified that her daughter will continue to work with David beyond the “Hit Man Returns: David Foster & Friends” concert set in Manila on Tuesday evening. Recall that it was previously reported that this concert will be David and Charice’s last collaborative effort.
“Na-misinterpret lang 'yung sinabi ni David. Kasi magkakaroon nga ulit ng bagong album at magso-solo tour si Charice,” Racquel told abs-cbnnews.com in a report published on Tuesday.
On the other hand, Charice said in the same PEP report, “Ang paghihiwalay, hindi yun mangyayari kahit lilipat siya sa Universal [Records].”
“I always tell David that I'm always here for him. He's always been there for me and whatever he wants to do with me, I'm in. We're a team,” she was quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, David expressed his interest to work with Tony Award-winning theater actress Lea Salonga. On Monday afternoon, “doctor to the stars” Vicki Belo posted on her Twitter account that she’s having lunch with David and that he “wants to get in touch” with Lea.
On this, the hit maker said that Lea’s name “just came up” during the course of their conversation.
“We actually argued. I said, 'I thought she was part of Mulan the musical. And they said, 'No, she was part of Mulan [the Disney movie].'
“I remembered her voice and that she was from the Philippines. She is an amazing singer. I would love for her to come to the show and experience all of this 'coz she's a great singer,” said he.
Vicki’s fiancé Hayden Kho also announced on Twitter the same day that David and Michael Bolton – who’s also part of the “David Foster & Friends” tour with Ashanti, Russell Watson and Philip Bailey – were “super impressed” by R&B singer Kyla. During the same press conference, David quoted Michael as describing Kyla as “super amazing.

How it feels to be short and a ‘minority person’ in H’wood: Charice opens up

How it feels to be short and a ‘minority person’ in H’wood: Charice opens up

By:

CHARICE belts “As Long As You’re There,” a show-stopping number in “Glee’s” recent season finale and one of the strong tracks of the show’s volume 6 soundtrack album.
LOS ANGELES—Charice was bright and chirpy on the phone, sometimes pausing and exclaiming “Whew!” when the questions demanded more than her usual sound bites.
But the Filipina singer with the multi-octave voice sounded like she relished being challenged, even though she seemed to choke when recalling some painful moments and disappointments in her young life.
In her remarkable journey, Charice has encountered quite a number of big names from various fields. But meeting Oprah for the first time is still tops on her list. “I was star-struck,” said Charice who was only 16 at the time. “Oprah is like my fairy godmother. I’m grateful that she’s still supporting me even to this day.”
Double whammy
After that first meeting and a guest appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” Charice and mom Raquel were about to fly back to Manila when Oprah, so taken with the petite Pinay, got them off the flight and brought back to her Harpo offices.
Oprah then called Grammy-winning music producer David Foster and asked if he could take Charice in as his artist. Thus began Charice’s climb to the pop music big leagues, resulting in hit singles, a debut album, US concerts with A-list performers and in other countries as a solo artist, and a stint on “Glee.”
“As Long As You’re There,” Charice’s song with “Glee’s” Vocal Adrenaline which got a standing ovation in the recent season finale, is one of the attractions of the recently released album, “Glee: The Music, Volume 6.”
In addition, she was cast in the film, “Here Comes the Boom,” which stars Salma Hayek, Kevin James, Henry Winkler and Fil-Am Reggie Lee.
Asked what it’s like to be short and a minority person—a double whammy if you’re trying to break the glass ceiling in the mainstream US entertainment scene—Charice broke into a hearty laugh and said: “When I was in Boston shooting [‘Here Comes…’], one of the crew members called me one day and said, ‘You’re very talented. I want you to read this sticker.’ The sticker said, ‘Short people rock!’ It was awesome!”
There was a catch in Charice’s voice as she answered our question: If she could go back to any part of her past, which one would it be?
“I would go back to the part before my dad left us,” she said. “We are very happy although our family is just my mom, my brother and I. But of course, I’m still hoping for a happy, complete family.”
Amid her success, Charice cuts a solitary figure at some events, trailed by a handler. “These days, I feel really alone,” she admitted. “My family is in the Philippines.” That’s why a song she belted in a “Glee” episode hit her in the gut. “When I was shooting that scene and singing ‘All By Myself,’ it was very emotional for me.”
Charice paused when asked what chapter in her life she would change and do differently if she could. “When I joined ‘Little Big Star,’ because I was in third place and of course, everybody wants to be a winner,” she said. “Why can’t we change that?” she asked, laughing. She was just 12 at the time, and wanted desperately to win the P1-million grand prize in the “American Idol”-type TV contest for children.
What did she learn from that setback? “It was very painful,” Charice confessed. “I was sad because I really wanted to help my mom. I was depressed for two or three months. I was just in my room, thinking of giving up. But my mom told me, ‘You don’t have to be like this. You can do better. I believe in your talent. That prize was not meant for you. There will be something better.’”
We asked how she reacts to the oft-expressed comment by some that there are plenty of Charice Pempengcos in the Philippines and that she was just fortunate that her videos went viral. A fan, David Dueñas, posted the videos on YouTube, landing Charice her first big TV guest spot in Korea and a fateful invitation on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”
Vulnerable moments
Charice replied: “It’s true there are a lot of great singers in the Philippines. But one of the reasons that I got discovered was my story. I’ve been working since I was seven. I call it work because I joined like a hundred singing contests. I told my mother to stop working. I had to go to school at the same time and it was crazy and now I’m here. I’m not saying it’s the best story ever but [it was a big factor].”
She has sung with brio even at the most formidable US events and in famous venues—from President Obama’s pre-inauguration galas to the Madison Square Garden. Charice revealed, however, that she still gets butterflies in her stomach before she strides onstage.
And when is she most vulnerable? “Reading some of the negative stuff sometimes still affects me,” Charice admitted. “Every time I feel insecure or hurt, I post a quote [on my Twitter]. Yeah, that is another thing not known about me. I post something like, ‘Behind my smile is everything you’ll never understand.’ That’s how I do it. I want to let it out.”
Long-term goals
Charice, who turned 19 last month, considers her birthday last year memorable because she spent it with 500 underprivileged children. Still very much a young girl at heart, she said, “And I got to dance with my crush in the Philippines, [actor] Sam Milby!”
As for her long-term goals, Charice said: “Just in case I don’t last in show business, I would love to be a lawyer.” Why law? “If I go into entertainment law,” she quipped, chuckling, “I can [write] my own contracts!”
When we prodded her to share what she dreams of achieving five years from now, she paused and then said: “Maybe become a Grammy winner, a successful actress.” We said we could see her in musical theater, too, but she demurred: “Maybe someday— I love my career right now as a pop singer.”
Before we put down the phone, we asked Charice if she could describe in three words her journey thus far. After yet another pause, Charice, slowly choosing and seemingly savoring what each word meant to her, said: “Enlightening … unbelievable … unexpected!” (Email rvnepales_5585@yahoo.com)

When Charice meets Bruno Mars

By Rito Asilo
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines—One singing sensation’s reject is another’s hit single. Filipinos aren’t very familiar with Alexandra Burke, but the original singer of “Before It Explodes,” the carrier track of Charice’s upcoming second international album, is a big star in England (her song, “Hallelujah,” was UK’s top-selling single of 2008). She won the fifth edition of the Simon Cowell-produced British talent show, “The X Factor” (which debuts in the US on Fox and on GMA 7 this year).
“Before It Explodes” was written for Burke’s debut collection, “Overcome,” but didn’t make the album’s final lineup. Even more noteworthy is the fact that the tune was written by Fil-Am recording star, Bruno Mars—who sings (and makes beautiful music) with Charice in the hit-bound new version.

The rousing, radio-friendly ballad sings about the bittersweet end of a beautiful romance, and benefits from the complementary styles of the teenage singer and the prolific Grammy-winning singer/songwriter.

Billboard charts

If you like “Grenade,” you’ll also enjoy listening to this pop ditty. So, grab a copy before it, well, explodes…on the Billboard charts! (Incidentally, “All By Myself,” Charice’s ear-ringing number from her most recent—albeit underwhelming—“Glee” outing, debuted on the Hot 100 last week in 87th place.)

Another heady source of Pinoy pride is “Glee’s” Fil-Am charmer, 24-year-old Darren Criss, who plays Blaine Anderson, Chris Colfer’s love interest in the series. The swoon-worthy singer-actor was born in San Francisco, California, but his mother is a native of Cebu (his father’s Irish). His Pinoy roots explain why he is as talented as he is charming.

Before Criss struck gold with “Glee,” he was best known for his portrayal of Harry Potter on the viral YouTube videos, “A Very Potter Musical” and “A Very Potter Sequel,” which were actually stage musical-comedies based on the popular JK Rowling series.

For the hit TV show, as the lead singer of The Warblers (New Directions’ all-male a cappella singing rival), Criss covered Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream,” and hit No. 1—the first time a “Glee” single has reached the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart!

The versatile performer’s other numbers (most of them sung with Tufts University’s The Beelzebubs) are even better, most notably his gorgeous duets with Colfer (“Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” from the group’s Christmasalbum) and Lea Michele (“Don’t You Want Me?”), as well as his sizzling versions of Paul McCartney’s “Silly Love Songs” and Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister.”

Happily, both tracks are featured in “Glee: The Music Presents The Warblers,” which debuted on theBillboard 200 at No. 2 last week. The collection includes two bonus tracks that were not performed on the TV show: Barbra Streisand and Barry Gibb’s “What Kind of Fool” and Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?” —You can’t get any sexier than that!

MANILA, Philippines – Charice continues to stretch her musical wings with her collaboration with Fil-Ams Jasmine Villegas and Black Eyed Peas’ Apl. de. ap, Apl's co-member Taboo, and singer-songwriter Jeremy Passion for a benefit song.
The aforementioned artists got together for “One Voice,” a song produced for the benefit of Gawad Kalinga (GK), the Filipino international organization committed to eradicate poverty by building empowered and sustainable communities, as reported on HollywoodLife.com.
Taboo, who wrote “One Voice” with Kristin Hosien (according to his tweet on May 4), is all praises for Charice.
“Charice was just in here, and she’s got an amazing voice. She’s just a mega power house when it comes to her singing capabilities,” he told HollywoodLife.com in an interview.
The Filipina international sensation re-tweeted on Taboo’s Twitter post of their photo together on May 4. His post was accompanied with this text: “@officialcharise collabo happened today for the big record we got along with @jeremypassion @apl_de.”
Taboo also noted in one of his tweets that Apl, whose real name is Allan Pineda, also helped out in making the song.
“my brother Apl_de is next to drop a verse on my song ..” a part of his post on Wednesday read.
Talks of an Apl-Charice team-up have been around for quite some time now. Apl himself revealed months back his plan of including Charice in a song he wrote for the celebration of the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution. In his interview with “The Buzz” in late February, he said: “I wanted to involve her in it (song). It’s not fully done so I have time to put her on it.”
Taboo, a Mexican-American, described “One Voice,” which was produced by Mexican duo Avila Brothers, as a “Latino / Filipino world anthem.” He believes the song will “show our unity within brown pea-ple coming together as one voice/ one heart /one beat!!”
“and it's gonna be the anthem for #Gawad Kalinga !!” Taboo also said.
Release date for the song is yet to be announced.
Although HollywoodLife.com mentioned Jasmine in their report, Taboo curiously did not bring up the young singer’s name in his tweets related to the “One Voice” project.
Many may well remember Jasmine as Justin Bieber’s leading lady in his hit video, “Baby.”

Charice Pempengco is back on ‘Glee’

n WednesdayCharice Pempengco is back on ‘Glee’
SORRY, Rachel Berry. Sunshine Corazon is back.

Charice Pempengco, who plays the pint-sized musical wonder on Glee, returned for the show’s “A Night Of Neglect” episode, which aired last week. And, in a conference call with journalists from different parts of the world, Charice promised it won’t be her last. “I’m really excited to do more,” she says.

But “Glee” isn’t the only thing keeping Charice busy. She is also busy shooting her first movie “Here Comes the Boom,” where she plays Malia, a smart and musically gifted girl who sounds a lot like her “Glee” character. Charice agrees. “Sunshine Corazon can relate to Malia.” Kevin James and Salma Hayek star in the movie.

Charice says she doesn’t know what Ryan Murphy has in store for Sunshine. But whether it’s a showdown with Rachel, a duet with Mercedes, or even a slot in “Glee”’s concert tour, one thing’s for sure--she’s going to be ready. “Being on “Glee” is such a great experience,” she says.

In this interview, Charice talks more about her “Glee” experience, why Naya Rivera is her favorite and what she thinks of Rebecca Black.

How do you feel about returning to “Glee” and singing “All By Myself”?

It feels great. I’m very excited to see it tonight and I feel really blessed to be a part of this show. When they gave me the song “All By Myself” I was really happy, because I’ve been singing that song forever and I love Celine Dion, and that’s why I’m very excited for you guys to see it.

What did you enjoy most about your time on the “Glee” set?

Getting to know all of them, the cast. I’m a “Gleek,” and when I found out that I was going to be part of it I got really excited, and when I met them they made me feel really comfortable. It’s just really amazing to see—to watch them.

Who are you closest to on the set?

I can’t choose because all of them—they’re all nice and they’re all sweet and all of them, they all talk to me, but I’m going to say that I think Naya Rivera is really nice because when I was on the first set, she knew all about me. She was like, “I saw you on Oprah.” I was really surprised when she was like, “I know you play guitar.” I’m like, “What?”

What was it like working with Lea Michele?

Lea’s just a very sweet girl. I mean, of course, the first time I was in a scene, I was really scared to meet everybody, but when I was on a set she was just like, “Hey, Charice. I’m very glad you’re here,” and when I actually came back—when I did this episode tonight, she was just like, “We miss you so much,” and she asked me to take a picture with her. She’s a really sweet girl.

Will you have another diva off with her?

My character, Sunshine, is looking forward to having another showdown with Rachel Berry, but I have no idea what’s going to happen next after this episode tonight. So I think just watch out for it.

Do you have a crush on any of the boys?

Well, no, but before I actually got a role for “Glee,” I had a favorite character and it’s Kevin. He’s a very nice guy.

Will you be singing any more duets on “Glee”? Who would you like to sing with?

For now, I don’t know what are they planning, if there’s another duet between Sunshine and Rachel, but if they’re going to ask me or give me a chance to choose one of the cast, I think I would love to have a duet with Mercedes. I think she’s an amazing singer and I love the way she sings.

Is there a song you’d like to sing on “Glee”?

If they’re going to give me a chance, I think I would love to sing my own song, especially the song that is actually coming out—my song that’s coming out today. It’s called “Before It Explodes.” It’s written by Bruno Mars. It’s a heartbreaking song but it’s a very great, powerful song.

Your fans on Twitter want to know—will Sunshine be going to the prom?

I don’t know. No, I’m serious. I don’t really know—but I’m really excited.

Do you have plans to do anything on the tour with them?

Right now, I have no idea about it. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but if they’re going to let me be part of it, it would be really exciting and I’d be really happy.

What has been some of the most memorable moments you’ve had while filming “Glee”?

Let’s see. Wow. I think being on “Glee” is such a great experience and the best experience ever, but I think the best part—when we were shooting me singing “All By Myself” because love that song. I’ve been singing that song forever, and when they gave me that song I was just like, “This is perfect.”

How much has “Glee” really helped you? Ellen really brought you over to the US, but has “Glee” turned that around and really added to that?

“Glee” is like one of the best reasons, best things. That’s why a lot of people recognize me because all of the people, they’ll be like, “I know you. I think I’ve seen you on “Glee.” So “Glee” really helped me and my career, as well as my life. So I want to thank them for having me on the show.

You’re also filming a movie. Do you prefer television or movies when it comes to acting?

Well I love both, but I’m going to say I love doing movies because there’s more time for me to get to know the people, and so far this movie—it’s been an amazing experience.

Tell us about your character in the movie “Here Comes The Boom.”

My character’s name is Malia. I’m a high school student and of course, Kevin James plays a high school biology teacher. He’s my teacher who actually sidelines as a fighter in MMA to help us save the music department. Of course, my character, she’s a brainiac and of course, she’s a musical genius. She plays piano. She sings and everything. Sunshine Corazon can relate to her, to Malia.

Is there anyone on your list of people that you haven’t performed with that you’d like to?

I haven’t met Beyoncé or Lady Gaga, and I would love to perform with them or maybe collaborate a song or something.

Do you have a message for your Filipino fans?

To all my Filipino fans, I’m just really happy that they’re supporting me right now. The support is just very strong. I can totally feel it, and I just want to say that I’m just hoping that they will keep on supporting me.
