Make Your Hands Clean with DIY Sanitizers

If you watch the hit television musical Glee, you probably recognize Emma Pillsbury. She is McKinley High’s guidance counselor. And aside from that, she’s a mysophobe.
Wonder what that is? Mysophobia describes the pathological fear of contact with dirt to avoid contamination and germs. So Emma doesn’t eat on a table without spraying alcohol nor does she pop a grape without wiping it first. And maybe we should try to be a little like her.
With all the germs that we come in contact with everyday, we can easily get infections. At home and even at our workplace, germs are inevitable. But you can stop spreading it and, in turn, stop infections by having healthy cleaning habits.
Washing our hands is the best way to do this since hand contact spreads almost 80% of infections. But since washing up every ten minutes or so is not very feasible, hand sanitizers are the solution.
You can use hand gels and sanitizers sold commercially to protect yourself, but there is a better option. You can make them yourself!
Ingredients for a hand sanitizer can be found at home, so you might as well do-it-yourself. Here’s how:
  • In a small bowl, mix ¼ cup each of pure aloe vera gel and grain alcohol with 5 drops of tea tree essential oil.
  • To make it smell less pungent, add 5 drops of your favorite fragrance oil.
  • Using a funnel, pour this blend into a bottle small enough to stash in your purse.
  • Rinse out an empty tube of makeup or lotion to make use of waste.
For your work desk and/or your dining tables at work, you may use the following concoction instead of buying commercial cleaning products.
  • Pour ¼ cup each of tea tree essential oil, lavender essential oil and white vinegar into a spray bottle. Add 2 cups of distilled water and shake well.
