PEARL...................retired executives and leaders

Dec. 29, 2009 was also a special day for senior citizens like me, especially members of the Board of the newly reorganized Palompon Executive and Retired Leaders (PEARL) headed by Jose Madejas and joined by Constancio Maupo,Jesus Sanchez, Agustin Arevalo, Alejo Ramirez, Claudio Villarmino, Greg Elep, and others.

They just held their induction ceremonies for new members of the PEARL Board at WEMDEES Restaurant at Rizal St., Central III, Palompon, Leyte on the said date.

The members of the board was formally inducted into office by no less than Mr. George C. Liok, after a hearty (bad for the heart) and sumptuous meal, a well known and prominent businessman, who we can say, rose from rags to riches.

Mr. Liok, and their family, we can say, attained their good life now through hard work and business acumen that can be seen usually on Pinoy's with some Chinese blood.

On this note, I, as a new member of the board can only wish to emulate their work attitude in order to gain the respect of the community with respect to business relationship.

Christmas...............time for giving

Part of the crowd who were able to receive something from our family was Albina Rios-Arnufo of Baranggay Cagnocot, Villaba, Leyte (photo at right).

She regularly goes to our house every month to be part of the pre-selected poor people to avail of the monthly help (one hundred pesos each) from our benefactor from abroad.

If you will notice, (see the picture) she has a big goiter dangling in her neck. I have already written the program "Wish Ko Lang" of Vicky Morales, Channel 7 program who helps other people who can't help themselves about her problem, but until now (several months later) the said TV Channel have not replied due to the bulk of request coming from all over the archipelago.

I do hope that you can help me solve her problem by praying for her and maybe calling the attention of Channel 7.

Senior Citizen's Christmas Party.......Gen. Assembly

December 16, 2009 was the red letter day for senior citizen's of Palompon, Leyte.

They definitely reserved a day for this momentous event to be with colleague's and friends to reminisce the days when they were still young and robust.

Many are looking forward for the announcement that they would be receiving something from the local government, together with the national government particularly the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Many are expecting that senior citizens between the ages 60 and 70 will be receiving P500 pesos, while those between the ages 70 and 80 will be getting about P1,000 pesos and lastly those above 80 will be receiving P1,500.00 pesos. Unluckily, those who are receiving pensions from either the GSIS or SSS will be getting nothing.

A presentation was made from the so-called Northern baranggays, Southern Baranggays and the Central Baranggays but only two were able to make a presentation which was won by the Central baranggays (above photo) wherein they depicted a serious pageant about the birth of Jesus Christ.

While the other presentor made a mockery of the birth of the Saviour by having an old man represent the child Jesus, the winner made a realistic presentation by having an authentic young baby boy be part of the drama which approvingly, was noticed by the judges to make them the runaway winner of the Christmas pageant.

Part of the appreciative crowd can be seen at right
were seriously following the action at the center of the Palompon Social Center were the program was held.

A sumptuous meal was held right after the program were everybody shared whatever food was brought by them (BYOP), to the once a year Christmas party and get together.

After a hearty meal, without waiting for the food to settle down in their stomach, music of yesteryears was played to bring itchy feet of dancers to grab another to the dance floor and join the beat of music flowing in the air.

After a while, you will notice that the dance floor have been dwindling with dancers, many of which are panting and trying to grab some fresh air and rest their shaky legs on their seats.

Really, the spirit is willing, but the body is not cooperating. After several dances, usually with the same sex, because many men opt to stay in their seats drowning with the local wine named "bahalina", some people can be seen making a beeline to the exits because they can't cope with what is happening in the dance floor.

Well, as they frequently say, "see you next year". (Hoping that they will still be alive for another day of camaraderie and dancing, if still able).

Death of a Colleague................

The demise of a colleague, although expected because of so many complications in his health and body was surely be missed by so many of his friends and relatives.

Bro. Cesar Viacrusis, who died last Dec. 3, 2009 and buried Dec. 6, 2009 was a tremendous loss especially to the Palompon Parish Church were he is serving religiously as a member of the Extra-ordinary Minister of the Holy Communion (EMHC).

For those going to Masses daily, he can be seen serving the 5:30am mass without fail, except of course
when he is not feeling well and when it is necessary for him to be brought to the hospital.

But in the last month of his life, he was still given the hope and chance to ask forgiveness for all the sins he has committed and prepare for his homecoming to the Lord's bosom. What a beautiful death. As Jesus Christ Himself promised through St. Gertrude "You may be sure that regarding one who devoutly assist at Holy Mass, I will send him as many of my Saints to comfort him and protect him during the last moments of his life as there will have been Masses which he has heard well". How consoling!

Before the teams were sent out to their asssigned Baranggay's, a training of participants was conducted by Mr. Roosevelt Henoguin, the BEC coordinator.

Viva Senor San Francisco............a yearly remembering

Another year is getting to a close and together we Palomponganons will always remember the past year with the help of our "manlalaban" Senor San Francisco. The past, many says have been terrible especially to those who have been affected by natural calamities including the two typhoons ("Ondoy and Peping") that hit Metro Manila with so much power and fury that almost drowned the whole of the metropolis for several weeks.

But we will not touch the negative things that happened to our countrymen because it was covered thoroughly by tri-media both local and foreign. We will be talking about what happened this past few days here in our local town of Palompon.

After the initial salvo on November 23, 2009 where a parade and motorcade was participated in by enthusiastic parishioners, to signal the start of the nine day novena in honor of the town's patron saint, the miraculous St. Francis Xavier, a nightly affair is being held to unwind and relax from the days hectic schedule and activities.

As usual the evening entertainment sponsored by various associations, NGO's, LGU's, Civic and  Religious take turns in sharing their best to offer the populace, whether its drama, disco or whatever.

December 2nd is the peak night of the various nightly offerings that can be offered by well meaning sponsors and concerned citizens. Mutya ng Palompon is a highly anticipated night were beauties from different organizations are presented after a series of tryouts and eliminations before they are finally shown to the public on the big night called "Mutya ng Palompon" night.

On the same day (Dec. 2) the highlight of all parades, where all participants in the daily activities are again invited to show their wares on the last day or wind-up of performances in honor of the revered Saint.

Nia Na Gyod..........BERNARDITA's Grocery

Just as what the ads indicates, Bernardita's Grocery finally opened last November 30, 2009, in time for the town fiesta being celebrated every 3rd of December in honor of our patron Saint Francis Xavier. It was a grandiose opening as per local standard with the usual balloons and flowers in abundance.

Of course the added amenities of discounts and prizes that accompanies the early customers and "suki" is a welcome respite. And take note the convenience of marketing in an air-conditioned and clean (spotless) surroundings. It also smells good, i.e. dried fish sealed in plastic and some are even vacuum packed, that even pest like ants, cockroach, houseflies and others are ashamed/afraid to get inside the new building and come near the foodstuffs.

An added bonus of course are the usual calendars being given away to loyal customers of the store and those who are allowed to purchase on credit with or without limit.

BRODETH Home Store

The opening of BRODETH Home Store located at Rizal St., Guiuan I, Palompon, Leyte as scheduled on November 9, 2009 was a success since many took advantage of the opening day promotions where many items such as housewares, dinner wares, kitchen utensils, tiles and so many others was definitely lower in pricing than those presently offered by the existing stores in Palompon, big and small alike.

This is exactly what will happen when businessmen would allow the normal flow of supply and demand and not be greedy enough to fix the price among themselves and gain huge profit as a result of their price fixing.

HENRY LHUILLIER Pawnshop

It seems that Henry Lhuillier Pawnshop is not in a hurry to start operation this year, since until now they have not started renovating their office/store located at Rizal St., Central I, Palompon, Leyte right in front of SM (Sayong & Manuel) shopping mall

GAISANO Group of Companies

Likewise, the Gaisano Group was having second thoughts on the site of their new building that would be constructed in the present site of the Palompon Social Center located at Rizal St., Ipil III right infront of the Catholic Parish Church. They are looking for a more spacious place where clients can park their cars while shopping. They are concerned by the small space that Rizal St., can offer.

They are also concerned that what happened in Ormoc City where they have to spend more on their operations since they don't own the land were their building is located. They prefer to buy a land outside the poblacion but very near it to make it hassle free for shoppers from different places or even for those coming from out of town. A rough estimate is about six (6) hectares of land is needed for a building with the requuired parking area and for future expansion.

SM Shopping Mart

What's happening in the vicinity of SM shopping mall and the bodega of ASL hardware store were traffic is so heavy every time that car carrying shoppers park their cars in the small spaces that the street can offer. It's really a nightmare for traffic enforcers. They are even not allowing the entry of pedicabs, the only available transportation for non-car owners, where they have to walk to the street corner to find a ride carrying with them bulky cartons of goods after shopping at SM shopping mall.

Another establishment will be joining those who are in the rush of making their presence felt in the ever growing and newly discovered business opportunities available in Palompon, Leyte.

The signing of Contract between Atherton Pawnshops Corporation with trade name HENRY LHUILLIER PAWNSHOP of Cebu City and Mrs. Connie Marilao-Elep of Palompon, Leyte was done at Cebu Holdings Center, Inc., Cebu Business Park, Cebu City yesterday, October 30, 2009. They expect to open business in the early part of 2010 after renovating their rented space located in front of the new SM (Sayong & Manuel) shopping mall at Rizal St., Central I, Palompon, Leyte.

An unexpected delay in the opening of BRODETH HOME Store was not a surprise since the owners want a presentable display center that can be compared and even better than those existing in Leyte of even Cebu. But of course, they wanted that the pricing of their product can be compared or even lower than those they can find anywhere in Leyte or Cebu. Since they were not able to open last October 28, 2009, a new date was scheduled on November 9, 2009 for its soft opening. And they hope that nothing can stop anymore the said timetable......

The new traffic regulation being enforced by the local police at Rizal Street where the local "potpot" is banned from entering Rizal St., from Brgy. Ipil III to Brgy. San Isidro, is something that should be thought of more thoroughly, since many shoppers of SM shopping mall who depend on the local "potpot" for transportation is against the implementation of the said regulation which they believe is not supported by a local ordinance from the municipality. They at least wanted a "one way" rule where they can still ride the transport of the poor who have no car or service of their own.

Bernardita's Grocery

In view of the fast approaching town fiesta and Christmas season the owners of Bernardita's grocery are doing their damn best to finish constructing their new building to fill the need of shoppers as seen in rush of people going in and out of SM shopping mall. They promised to open the new grocery in time for the town fiesta celebration and Christmas shopping rush.

After the initial salvo of people trying to buy something from the new SM, the second day was more subdued and normal. People are even comparing the price of the new mini mart against other establishment like Erwin Enterprise where they said prices are cheaper but buying a thing or two is a hustle or "samok". While the new SM is clean and air-conditioned to make your shopping a breeze and hustle free.

There is a report that the new store lost some goods during the opening last Monday, October 19, 2009. You cannot really dismiss these fast operators who seem to thrive when everybody is busy doing their thing. They said that these people operates in groups of five or more to distract staff of establishments they strike. What they observe last Monday is that all personnel or staff of the new SM was they were all in uniform so it was easy for the bad elements to identify their target.

Another establishment worth watching is the grand opening on Wednesday October 28, 2009, of the new BRODETH Marketing a hardware store located just infront of the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Guiuan I, Palompon, Leyte. It is a three storey building where the showroom of various building requirements of homeowners in whatever need or area of the house they need to modernize or repair.

SM (Sayong & Manuel) Finally Opened

After a long and much awaited opening the Shopping Mall located at Rizal St., Central I, Palompon, Leyte finally opened its doors to the public on October 19, 2009. Blessing of the edifice was made a day earlier to avoid the rush of people trying to outdo each other in buying a thing or two at the new and air-conditioned shopping center of the town.

The blessing of the new building was held about ten o'clock in the morning of October 18, 2009. It was attended by friends, relatives and some prominent people invited by the owners. Parlor games was introduced to kids who attended, much to their delight together with the parents who accompanied them.

After a hectic and tiring morning the kids together with their parents and guest were invited to share with the owners and staff of the new establishment a sumptuous meal catered by a local caterer. About one o'clock in the afternoon guest and invitee's slowly returned to their own homes and businesses where traffic on the main street returned back to its normal state.

The next day was more of festive since the owners have given the first two hundred patrons a special gift. About six in the morning, early patrons began arriving to taste the ambiance of the
new mini mart touted to be the best in this Northern part of Leyte. From a couple of hundreds the crowd increased to about a thousand as more and more people arrived to be a part of history in the making, "that I was there when SM opened".

Traffic was manageable but not normal since many are trying to see the new addition to the town's ever growing business establishment that are sprouting like mushrooms. A minor problem was felt by shoppers when they noticed the lack of baskets or shopping carts needed for an efficient and hustle free marketing.

In the second floor about half of the stores renting space opened including a computer game zone, a spa, a beauty salon, several food shops, houseware store, pet shop, ready to wear store, a cellphone shop, and others who remained close and did not took advantage of the opening crowd.

One can notice that many so called patrons came out empty handed. That their purpose is just to see the new establishment and maybe buy some things later on. Some cannot afford the long wait in the POS or cash register. In going out, a staff was busy handing out candies to outgoing patrons and onlookers.

An entertainment provided by Knorr Real Sarap seasoning mix through their group of hip hop dancers was a delight to watch dancing a mix of modern dance and music. Raffle prizes are in store for those who bought Knorr products inside the SM mini mart.

Outside free taste of Tanduay Rhum was offered to everyone together with a small chunk of fried fish fillet. People going in and out of the new establishment subsided only when they realized that they have to answer the call of their empty stomach and maybe to come back later to resume their urge to by some necessities for their homes.

Golden Dragon Marketing

The scheduled blessing last September 26, 2009 of the newly finished Saint Francis Xavier Parish plaza was marred by the tail end of typhoon "Ondoy" which wrought havoc in Metro Manila. Though the blessing pushed through even with the rain soaked tables, many still braved the weather and stayed behind to show camaraderie with various faith communities and organizations present during the wet and windy affair. The plaza now is a showcase for the parishioners.

Many feel that they are part owner of the plaza since many have contributed from a single piece to several hundreds of stone blocks, depending on the capacity of the donors. Early morning joggers or health buffs can be seen, some bringing babies with them. They can feel the safety and cleanliness of the new plaza.

In the evening, promenaders can afford to stay late since the kaleidoscope of lights are put on. Maybe there will come a time when dancing lights with music will be the next project of some well to do families to enhance the beauty of Palompon.

Golden Dragon Marketing

Meanwhile, simple opening was initiated last September 28, 2009 of the Golden Dragon Marketing a store located at the former KODAK store beside JULIE's Bakeshop in Rizal Street, Central I, Palompon, Leyte. Without so much fanfare the store, that deals with household merchandise, ready to wear products and much much more, have been visited by so many Palomponganons but the problem is as usual......almost all the products came from only one country......China.

Still the much awaited opening and blessing of SM (Sayong & Manuel) Palompon was again moved to a new date i.e........ October 19, 2009. But the long wait can be forgiven, since the owners will be introducing a brand new Mini Mart on the ground floor and about 12 stallholders on the second floor, wanted a no hitch opening where everybody will be happy to see a brand new store with brand a new experience that every Palomponganons can be proud of, since the store will be air-conditioned and using state of the art computers and POS to give shoppers the comfort that they usually experience in big establishments in mega cities such as Cebu and Metro Manila. As of this writing the facade of the building was almost complete, with the installation of signage put in place, and finishing touches here and there being rushed to avoid another opening extention.

Another highly awaited is the opening of BRODETH MARKETING, a wholesale and retail hardware establishment located at Rizal Street, Brgy. Guiuan I, a stone throw away from the Roman Catholic Cemetery, a four story building which is almost complete as of this writing except for the finishing touches that will definitely took sometime. Of course many are wishing for the early completion of the building, since they know that competition will bring down the prices of construction materials/products being sold high in this coastal area.

An OBITUARY will be put up in this space for the benefit and knowledge of everyone, especially those who are away from home...i.e. our beloved Palompon. So I am inviting everybody to submit the names of their friends and relatives who died ahead of us for information and publication. Just give the details like name, age, address and date and time of internment if available.

Fire Hits Downtown Palompon

A big fire initially diagnosed as faulty wiring burned down the Bernardita's \Grocery located at the center of the town's business district at Brgy. Central III, Poblacion, Palompon, Leyte at around 0200H 21st of September 2009. A subsequent query from a member of the Liok family says that about 10 million pesos was extinguished together with the one storey building in just about an hour of the raging fire, where people can only look helplessly at the site.

The fire which extinguished on its own because of the two firewalls (Myrna Mart and P & P Building) adjoining the gutted  establishment. Majority of the people were afraid of what might happen because the water utility distributing water in the town was undergoing rehabilitation for four days, wherein the schedule of resumption is on the 22nd of September yet.

What makes the situation worse is the non-availability of a fire truck in the town in the strict sense of the word, but only a water tanker. The arrival of fire trucks from Philphos Corp. and Villaba, Leyte was of no help since water was not available. It was just providential that winds that would fan the flames was also not around.

Onlookers can just thank their favorite saints, because in the previous fire that happened on the same spot several years ago, about eight persons, mostly sales ladies of the store they were serving, perished when they were trapped inside the burning building.

One lucky establishment that would benefit immensely from this incident is the opening that is being waited by almost everyone is the new SM (Sayong & Manuel) at Rizal St., Central I,  several blocks away from the burned Bernardita's grocery store on the same street.

Palawan Pawnshop a recent addition to Palompon,s growth

A parade held in the town poblacion announced the opening recently of the PALAWAN PAWNSHOP, a lending corporation with over 300 branches nationwide, which offers the usual trade of a pawnshop which is pawning of articles and of late the remittances of money from different parts of the globe where OFW's congregate.

The said pawnshop is located at the P & P building in Arellano St. which is quite near the buzz and bustle of business locators. This establishment is in addition to the previous locators such as MH Lhuillier, Cebuana Lhuillier, Prime Asia, OCCI and other lending institutions located in various parts of the town.

Another big establishment that would be opening soon is a furniture & appliance display store located at the former KODAK store, beside JULIE's Bakeshop at the main road Rizal Street.

New SM Palompon opening soon.......................

A two storey building being constructed in Rizal St., the main road of the bustling town of Palompon, Leyte is considered to be uplifting the new face of the fast moving economy of the said town. You might be wondering why SM is too interested in Palompon when the town is still not big enough to accommodate a big store like that. But SM stands for Sayong and Manuel the family of Manuel Yap, owners and operators of the new building.

I heard that the upper floors were rented out to other business people, giving others the chance to be involved in business too.

Of course the building is being constructed under the watchful eyes of the beautiful and charming Ms. Myrah Cabahug, who is always seen and present everyday to see to it that no untoward incident and everything in the building plan are being followed and construction materials as required, are put in place.

Right in front of the SM building is the newly opened GPMC Enterprise authorized dealer of the following products: Fullerlife, Natasha,

MSE, Everbilena, Avon, Sundance, Fashion Exchange, Dakki, and others....If you want to be a dealer of all these products, just present yourself to Jun Mopon and presto you're it. Registration is Free.

For a while many are waiting for the opening of the four storey Asayas building in downtown Palompon, but the eagerness of the townspeople went to an abrupt stop when after several months the expected opening never materialized due to some family problems.

But of course it's just a temporary setback because you cannot hold back the full speed economic progress which everybody is dreaming about. An example of which is the two new Western Pacific Union outlets located again in Rizal St. They are not afraid to compete with each other knowing the they have different groups of customers

On another part of the town particularly in Baranggay Guiuan I, right in front of the Roman Catholic Cemetery another building is being constructed said to be owned by the operators of BRODETH Marketing, a hardware company based in Ormoc City to address the needs of the coastal towns of Leyte particularly Palompon, Villaba, Tabango, San Isidro and Matag-ob.

Construction of its building is also fast paced, since they are using enough men and materiel to be at pace with the incoming recovery of the economy early next year. But slow economy or not, it can be seen that construction, particularly private homes are at a fast pace in Palompon especially in the barrio's where overseas filipino worker's (OFW) abound.
