Today I am featuring some of the food establishments that mushroomed as a result of the pioneer status of the SM shopping mall where most of the local products are sold or displayed. One of the oldest food processing small scale industry in Palompon is MONETTE's located at Ibabao, Central II, Palompon, Leyte or the new National Highway going to and fro Isabel and Matag-ob, Leyte respectively where the fruit tartlets are made. The most saleable of course is the Peanut Milklets, Pineapple Tartlets and other Fruit tartlets.
A similar establishment from Isabel, Leyte is cashing in on root crops processing particularly yema products coming from local nagka, ube, and milk. From their display at the said shopping mall, it can be seen that their products can last for a long time since the volume of their products are the biggest so far. Bingbings (Isabel, Leyte) Yema products is also giving other processors a run for their money since their products were made to last for a longer period than others.
Another product needing a much needed attention of food enthusiast from Palompon and neighboring towns in this part of Northern Leyte is the Special Polvoron made by SHIRM'S of Sabang, Palompon, Leyte. When I was still a young boy my mother used to make polvoron in our hometown of Vinzons, Camarines Norte. I used to gulped down one packet of polvoron at a time, even up to the extent of coughing because the said delicacy should be taken down in small doses together with some water if needed. From Sabang they are also supplying shoppers of SM with sun dried fresh peanuts fried in low calorie coconut oil.
An aspiring food processor aptly named Eday Juliet, also of Palompon, Leyte is trying to propagate the value of a unique and untried recipe using "malunggay" or moringa leaves as basic ingredient of malunggay oatmeal cookies. Another product they are proud to introduce to the eating public is their "ampalaya" or bitter gourd oatmeal cookies which is also gaining ground with the eating public Like what they say."masustansya na, barato pa".
Not to be left behind are some businessmen from Ormoc City like the
Stephanie Bakeshop who allowed us to sample their Egg Crackers and Special Patatas. While from Tacloban City Goldenduck Enterprises contributed the biggest supply of food products like Barquillos, Sesame cookies, Egg Cracklets, Mamon Tostado, Butter Cookies, Spl. Favorita, Tri-Patata, Eggnog and much much more. .
There are other products and food processors that I was not able to mention and feature in this blog. But what is important is that people are now aware that there are other ways in which we can earn money. Though it is time consuming and labor intensive, the rewards are great if we know how to do something if opportunity comes. Meanwhile, Manuel E. Yap, the proud owner of the SM (Sayong & Manuel) shopping mall makes his presence felt everyday and quick to the draw even with an imaginary pistol as the picture shows...
