Kris Aquino brings free cancer vaccination campaign to Leyte

By JACK GADAINGAN

PALO, Leyte — Some 100 women and 100 children from this town are expected to live healthier lives after getting cervical cancer vaccines and pneumococcal vaccines respectively for free courtesy of presidential sister Kris Aquino.
Kris brought her Medical Mission on Pneumococcal and Cervical Cancer Vaccination last Sunday here where the free vaccinations were conducted at the Archbishop Hall. The activity was supported by Glaxo Smith-Kline pharmaceutical company, and the provincial government of Leyte and the local government unit of Palo.
The TV host-actress and youngest sibling of President Aquino said the free vaccination for women and children in Palo is part of her social contribution, an effort to help Filipino women fight against cervical cancer – which is the second killer of women of all ages, next to breast cancer.
Kris thanked Palo Mayor Remedios “Matin” Petilla and Leyte Gov. Carlos Jericho Petilla for their support. She has chosen Palo as among the first recipients of her medical mission as part of her electoral campaign promise during the last elections.
It was gathered that everyday about 12 Filipinas suffer from cervical cancer, making the disease a cause of concern not just to women but to their loved ones as well, male partners included. With the vaccine, women are about 80 percent protected from the virus that is mostly rooted from sexual contact, Kris explained.
With this vaccination women will get protection against 12 other cancer-causing HPV types which include HPV strain 45, a strain which prevalently causes a more severe form of cervical cancer among Filipinas, it was learned.
Kris also distributed hundreds of toys for the kids in attendance, and also visited the children at the nearby Lingap Center located at the Government Center, Palo town where she continued to distribute toys
