Student learns lessons on self-reliance from Ralph Waldo Emerson
THERE are millions of possibilities in this world for a single person. The choices are limitless; all you need is want it, believe in it, and you can achieve it! With every choice there are consequences and rewards, and with every choice not made, also come missed opportunities.
The path to success and happiness is paved with our decisions—the turning points for where we had problems in choosing, the cracks on the pavement where we had mistakes, and the one-way highways where we settled with something.
That something is a goal. When a goal is made, highways, ship docks and railroad stations begin to build themselves as you progress, to attain the goal.
Consistency, complacency
We recently read a poem concerning self-reliance by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Many parts of the poem affected me in ways that changed my perspective on things. One is: “Consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.”
I thought it was quite silly, because to me, consistency was having organized thoughts. I realized what Emerson meant by consistency. It was to have a point of view, a solid idea in your mind, that would not change even when proven wrong by so many. It is what makes consistency in one’s mind a terrible monster.
The first step to success and achieving your goals is to be open-minded, for the path to greatness has many new and different ideas from yours.
Sometimes they will be better; and if you do not open your mind, your own ideas will not improve—they may even deteriorate. If they aren’t as good as yours, you can still open your mind to them by finding the flaws in their ideas and keeping them in mind so you don’t make the same mistakes.
Don’t keep the monster of consistency in your mind. Always be open and let others influence you to be better. Don’t be afraid to change your mind; it is not a sign of weakness, but one that shows you are open to change.
Man is capable of all things
Emerson stated: “Man is all things” is another statement I liked. Although, open to many interpretations, like man could have any personality; and it is what he is influenced by, which makes him who he is.
I believe man is capable of anything! All skills and talents are accessible to anyone, as long as they work to learn it.
A good friend has his eyes set on a good college and a great course. He plans to take up medicine but he also has other aspirations. He wants to take up business, cooking, and even try to be a teacher.
He has four possibilities and even more choices! Should he take one course, two, or all four? Or should he take a completely different route?
And from those four possibilities come even more possibilities: from medicine, should he try to aim higher, and become a surgeon? In business, should he decide to stick to small ones, or go for large enterprises? As teacher, should he work to become a professor? If he chooses to be something else, it could even branch out into another possibility—he could be a doctor and a professor at the same time.
The possibilities may seem small at first but after a few decisions, they become more and more, until they are endless.
False thoughts
I have my heart set on a white coat as well—I want to be a scientist. But I would also love to take up medicine or business. I tend to doubt myself in many ways and this prohibits me from focusing on my goals.
That’s the problem with making goals, sometimes there are occurrences that begin to mess with your mind, and have you thinking that it’s not worth it, or it’s unattainable, because you aren’t good enough. That is false!
Anything and everything is within your reach!
There’s nothing wrong with dreaming and believing. It’s only right to believe in yourself and your capabilities.
All you have to do is try and keep trying; even the sky’s no longer the limit—you could be an astronaut, a painter, a psychiatrist, a mailman— anything you want!
Mastering yourself
The only person who can stop you from doing what you please is yourself. No words, no actions by any other person can prohibit you from reaching your goals. It is only by your own hands, your own thoughts, and actions that you condition your mind to do otherwise.
You have only one shot at life, so think hard, open your mind, and never neglect an opportunity.
Take risks but never strain yourself or bring others down in the process. Do good things, make changes, and let love in! It may or may not happen too soon, but nonetheless, you must always fulfill every promise to yourself.
Make a goal, and start working on it. Do everything it takes to achieve it, even if it means learning something new, or giving something up. In the end, you will gain many things, so start doing them!
