MANILA, Philippines – A 10-year-old Filipina-Canadian has impressed Lady Gaga so much that the modern music icon burst into tears while watching her rendition of “Born This Way” on YouTube.
“Can't stop crying watching this. This is why I make music. She is the future,” Gaga tweeted on Feb. 17, together with a link of the YouTube clip, to her over eight million followers.
The young singer, named Maria Aragon, was born and raised in Canada by her Filipino parents, as she stated on her YouTube channel profile. “I’ve never been to the Philippines [though],” she added.
Her video, uploaded last Feb. 16, has since gone viral and has so far garnered over 708,000 views. As of Feb. 18, Maria’s video ranked number one as the “Most Viewed” in the Canada and Musicians – Canada categories, while it also placed as the second “Most Viewed (Today)” in Musicians. It currently holds the top spot on “Top Rated (Today)" and the fourth spot on “Top Favorited (Today).”
Overall, it is the 17th highest viewed clip on the popular video-sharing site as of this writing.
Maria enthused that she’s a big fan of music and influenced by artists such as Jessie J, Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Yiruma, Michael Giacchino, Lady GaGa, and Armalyn Tesoro.
She also does not use music sheets when playing. “I figured the chords out myself and it's all by ear :),” she wrote.
Gaga performed “Born This Way,” her first single off her third album of the same title, live for the first time last Feb. 13 at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards, coming out of a giant egg on stage like a newly hatched chick. The single is the pop singer-songwriter’s third number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart after “Just Dance” and “Poker Face.”
“Born This Way” also marks a historical feat for Gaga, as it is Billboard’s 1,000th Hot 100 number one. The chart has been tallying the most popular songs in the U.S. for 52 years now.
The pop superstar also took home three trophies at the Grammys, namely Best Pop Vocal Album for “The Fame Monster,” and Best Short Form Music Video and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Bad Romance.”
