TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines—The Department of Health (DoH) will spend at least P300 million to repair hospital buildings in Eastern Visayas where cracks were found.

Dr. Exuh Sabalberino, head of the health facility enhancement and hospital technical assistance of the regional DoH, on Monday said the department will spend the amount “to ensure safety of patients.”

A team from the DoH national and regional offices inspected the hospital buildings across the region from Wednesday until Sunday last week.

Sabalberino said cracks on walls and ceilings were found in the buildings of provincial, district and community hospitals. These buildings, she said, were “very old.”

The hospitals being identified for repair are Oppus Yñiguez Memorial Provincial Hospital in Maasin City, Southern Leyte; Manuel Veloso Memorial Hospital, a district hospital in Palompon, Leyte; Samar Provincial Hospital in Catbalogan City; Calbayog District Hospital in Calbayog City and Basey District Hospital in Samar.

District hospitals in Balangiga, Guiuan and Dolores, the community hospital in Llorente and General MacArthur in Eastern Samar, Northern Samar Provincial Hospital in Catarman and the Allen town district hospital in Northern Samar were also found to have suffered cracks.

Sabalberino said the DoH would transfer the operations of the Southern Leyte provincial hospital because it sits on a hill, which is considered a landslide-prone area.
