CHRISTMAS was a happy one for Hilario Espayo after a miraculously successful surgery at the St. Luke’s Hospital through the intercession of St. Padre Pio.
Hilario suffered from “Madelung disease” (named after German physicist Erwin Madelung). It is a condition in which the body’s upper extremity suffers from a deformity characterized by abnormal development of the end of the radius (one of the two bones of the upper arm).
According to Fr. Jojo Gonda, parish priest of St. Padre Pio Shrine in Sto. Tomas, Batangas, the conversion of Hilario Espayo contributed to the miracle attached to his surgery at the St. Luke’s Hospital. After 18 years staying away from the church’s ministry, Hilario prayed the nine-day novena to St. Padre Pio. The surgery took place on the ninth day of his novena.
Charley Velasco told Fr. Gonda that after 20 hours of surgery, the patient went straight to the ward: there was no more need for the ICU or the recovery room. But he needs assistance from generous people for his operation and hospital stay.
“I brought with me the relic of St. Padre Pio (the one given to me by Fr. Hermilindo di Capua last March 15) when I visited Hilario,” Father Gonda said. “After listening to his inspiring of conversion and blessing, I prayed over him, blessed him with the relic of Padre Pio and anointed him with the oil of the saint.”
