St Raymond Nonnatus is named so because he was "Not Born"...An Interesting Story

Saint Raymond Nonnatus is a Spanish saint surnamed "Nonnatus" meaning in Latin "not born." He was "not born" in 1204 and died in 1240.

He received the nickname "not born" because he entered this world by caesarean section - an extremely rare phenomenon in the 13th century. His mother died in labor and so they cut open her belly. The baby was still alive. This was taken as a sign that God had special plans for him. He was "ransomed" and his life was sacrificially dedicated to merciful act of ransom. The painting above shows the infant Raymond Nonnatus being cared for by angels since he entered this world without a mother.

By the way, Saint Raymond is one of the patron saints of pregnant women and childbirth. So he's a great saint for Catholic families.

His miraculous birth was the beginning of a miraculous life. He was a contemporary of St Dominic and St Francis, but did not join their orders. Rather, Saint Raymond became a member of the Mercedarian Order in order to ransom Catholic captives from the Mohammedans of North Africa. He traveled to North Africa and is said to have surrendered himself as a hostage when his money ran out.

Even as a slave, Saint Raymond continued his priestly ministry and preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the Mohammedans. Troubled by his preaching, the Mohammedans punctured a hole through his lips with a hot iron, and padlocked his mouth to shut him up permanently.

Saint Raymond was ransomed by his order and in 1239 returned to Spain. He died at Cardona, sixty miles from Barcelona in AD 1240.

In Mexico City, the faithful leave padlocks on the altar dedicated to Saint Raymond as votives against gossip and slander! This hearkens back to the saint having his own mouth pierced and locked up.

Pope Paul VI removed this great saint's feast day (Aug 31) from the calendar in 1970. A big mistake in my lowly layman's opinion.

Saint Raymond Nonnaturs, pray for us!

24th Founding Anniversary BOC Isabel

By Greg M. Elep
Palompon, Leyte

It has been four years and eighth months since I filed and was approved my optional retirement from the Bureau of Customs, Sub-port of Isabel, Isabel, Leyte. And as I reminisce the days when I was still working in the said Port, it seems that nothing big has change, except for the fact that I am not anymore working with my former colleagues in the BOC.

As of now I am happy with what I am  now as a Licensed Real Estate Broker.....trying to convince my co-employees to save something for the future by investing in real estate such as condominium, house and lot, lot only, and others.....but I don't want to dwell on these but on their anniversary wherein your humble self was invited, being a former employee of the said Bureau.,

If I remember right, this is the first time ever that an anniversary of the Sub-port was celebrated, because I worked with the said agency from 1991 to 2007 when I optionally retired..My position then was under Port Operation Section as Security Guard II but from time to time was also assigned as a Customs Inspector.

"The promulgation if Executive Order NO. 127 on January 30, 1987 by the late President Madam CORAZON COJUANGCO AQUINO in relation to Executive Order No. 39 dated August 9, 1986 was the authority and/or reference in the existence of the Sub-port of Isabel under the Principal Port of Entry of Customs Collection District VIII".................................Coll.SEVELLINO C. TOMOL.

As can be gleaned from the roster of former and current Collector of Customs
I can say that I have been a part or have worked under all of them.

I can also proudly say that during my term as Acting Cashier from 2001 to 2007, was the peak of the collection performance of the said Sub-Port as can be seen from the graph showing the Collection Performance from 1988 up to 2012.

But I can't also blame the others because the collection performance is very much affected by external factors such as the economic downturn that happened in the USA and European countries, which is still happening now. Only the Asian countries remain to be robust particularly China, Indonesia and luckily the Philippines because of the OFW's that keep on remitting dollars that make the economy in the black.
Above are the Collector of Customs assigned in the Sub-Port from 1988 to present. And can be seen below is the current Organizational Chart of the Sub-Port of Isabel, Leyte.
While posing in front of the Bureau of Customs building below are the men and women of the Sub-Port of Isabel, Isabel, Leyte under the Administrative jurisdiction of the Port of Tacloban, Collection District VIII, Tacloban City.
The amiable and dashing Sub-Port collector welcoming visitors and guest on their 24th Founding Anniversary celebration during the short program after lunch last August 30, 2012.
Posted on the walls are some of the benefactors and supporters such as Congresswoman Lucy Torres Gomez, Mcmai (Cebu) Trading Corporation, and Seairland Cargo Forwarding and Bulkhandling Corp. among others were not shown like PASAR Corp., Philphos Fertilizer Corp., Rollway Customs Brokerage Services, A. G. Lanticse Customs Brokerage, Aloma B. Wong Customs Brokerage, Lionship of Rudy Ferraren, Triple A Shipchandling, RV Gorres Shipping Agency and others.
Acting Deputy Collector Dodz Aranas reading the message of the former Sub-Port Collector Rex Y. Palanca enjoining the officers and employees of the Sub-Port to continue doing their best to obtain the collection target much needed by the government to implement priority projects.
Small and petite Nina D. Acenas, a contractual employee who has been serving the Sub-Port for more than five years already is a recipient of a plaque of appreciation given by the collection agency for a job well done particularly and/or especially the 24th Founding Anniversary of the Sub-Port.
Group singing led by the Sub-Port Collector saying "If We Hold On Together" we will surpass whatever problem encountered in the performance of their assigned task.
I am suggesting next time during the Silver Anniversary of the Sub-Port, to avoid using notes while singing and instead use the idiot box where a song of Diana Ross can be downloaded together with lyrics so that they won't be distracted by holding notes.....they don't even know if the audience they are singing to are still there because the are busy looking at their individual notes.
The Acting Deputy Collector once again on the rostrum to close the short program and also to thank the visitors and guest who shared with them their pride and happiness in celebrating the 24th Founding Anniversary of the Sub-Port of Isabel, Leyte.
A retired former Customs employee, Mr. Samuel Pernia, singing his heart out with an all time favorite which almost everybody knows that it's his signature (jazz) song when asked (voluntary sometimes)to sing in such occasion.
Port of Tacloban together with the Sub-Port of Isabel employees pose for posterity, led by the former Port Collector Leovigildo Dayoja of Tacloban Port, now of the Legaspi Collection District and Ms.Rose Padilla, Administrative Chief, Port of Tacloban.
Acting Deputy Collector of Customs Dodz Aranas taking pictures of the occasion, since he was also assigned as the official photographer of the anniversary celebration.

St Augustine on the Samaritan Woman as the Catholic Church Not Yet Righteous

St Augustine on the Samaritan Woman as the Catholic Church Not Yet Righteous

Saint Augustine provides a beautiful description of the episode of Christ and the Samaritan woman at the well. In this passage, he describes her as mystically representing the "Church not yet made righteous." You'll remember that Saint John highlights her position as an adulteress and as not pertaining to the Jewish people. Moreover, Christ initiates by asking her for a drink - which then leads to her desire for waters of life.

John's account profoundly highlights the ministry to the Samaritans as full members of the Church through baptism. Perhaps John was also recalling the time when he and Peter administered the sacrament of Confirmation to the first Samaritan believers (Acts 8:14). The incorporation of Samaria into the Church recalls the Messianic prophecy to reunite "all Israel."

Here's Saint Augustine:

A woman came. She is a symbol of the Church not yet maderighteous but about to be made righteous. Righteousness follows from the conversation. She came in ignorance, she found Christ, and he enters into conversation with her. Let us see what it is about, let us see why a Samaritan woman came to draw water. The Samaritans did not form part of the Jewish people: they were foreigners. The fact that she came from a foreign people is part of the symbolic meaning, for she is a symbol of the Church. The Church was to come fromthe Gentiles, of a different race from the Jews.

We must then recognize ourselves in her words and in her person, and with her give our own thanks to God. She was a symbol, not the reality; she foreshadowed the reality, and the reality came to be. She found faith in Christ, who was using her as a symbol to teach us what was to come. She came then to draw water. She had simply come to draw water, in the normal way of man or woman.

Jesus says to her: Give me water to drink. For his disciples had gone to the city to buy food. The Samaritan woman therefore says to him: How is it that you, though a Jew, ask me for water to drink, though I am a Samaritan woman? For Jews have nothing to do with Samaritans.

The Samaritans were foreigners; Jews never used their utensils. The woman was carrying a pail for drawing water. She was astonished that a Jew should ask her for a drink of water, a thing that Jews would not do. But the one who was asking for a drink of water was thirsting for her faith.

Listen now and learn who it is that asks for a drink. Jesus answered her and said: If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, “Give me a drink,” perhaps you might have asked him and he would have given you living water.

He asks for a drink, and he promises a drink. He is in need, as one hoping to receive, yet he is rich, as one about to satisfy the thirst of others. He says: If you knew the gift of God. The gift of God is the Holy Spirit. But he is still using veiled language as he speaks to the woman and gradually enters into her heart. Or is he already teaching her? What could be more gentle and kind than the encouragement he gives? If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, “Give me a drink,” perhaps you might ask and he would give you living water.

What is this water that he will give if not the water spoken of in Scripture: With you is the fountain of life? How can those feel thirst who will drink deeply from the abundance in your house?

He was promising the Holy Spirit in satisfying abundance. She did not yet understand. In her failure to grasp his meaning, what was her reply? The woman says to him, Master, give me this drink, so that I may feel no thirst or come here to draw water. Her need forced her to this labor, her weakness shrank from it. If only she could hear those words: Come to me, all who labor and are burdened, and I will refresh you. Jesus was saying this to her, so that her labors might be at an end; but she was not yet able to understand.

How OFWs can grow their money back home

By Mike Aquino for Yahoo! Southeast Asia

If you’re an OFW, you enjoy our most heartfelt gratitude: your remittances help support the Philippine economy in the global downturn, with inflows reaching record highs of $20.117 billion in 2011, as reported by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP). But what happens to all that money when it hits our shores? If you’re wondering what else to do with your income after you’ve paid your kids’ tuition fees and built your house… where can you invest the rest?

With the Philippine economy on an apparent upswing, the opportunities for profit have also multiplied. Where you put your money depends on your appetite for risk and desire for return. Francisco J. Colayco, in his book Pera Mo, Palaguin Mo! suggests three factors that need to be evaluated prior to writing that check:

Appetite for risk: How safe—or how risky—is the investment? What are the risks that come with it? Colayco asks that you evaluate if “the financial return or income [is] commensurate to the risk [you are] taking,” while keeping in mind that the risks are not always financial.

“Sometimes it is not only money you are putting at risk,” Colayco reminds his readers. “It may also include family relations, reputation, your job security and other personal, professional relationships.”

Liquidity:
“How long will my money be tied up?” Colayco suggests you ask. “May I withdraw anytime and convert it back to cash?”

Potential Yield:
Is the advertised return on the investment higher than prevailing inflation rates?

You can take advantage of a wide variety of investment opportunities in the Philippines that offer the right mix of these three factors. These opportunities also have varying barriers to entry—mutual funds, for instance, may only require an initial minimum investment of about P5,000, while investments in medium-scale businesses or property may require that you sink in millions of pesos.

Let’s start with government securities, stocks and mutual funds. These short-term investments are good choices for investors with relatively modest sums to invest. Government securities are debt investments, i.e. you literally lend money to the government. Stocks represent units of ownership in companies, i.e. you buy a piece of a company. Mutual funds are collective investment schemes that trade in both government securities, stocks, and other securities.

You can buy government securities at any of the thirty-odd authorized government securities dealers (GSEDs) listed in the Bureau of Treasury. Banks and other financial concerns also offer a variety of mutual funds with varying degrees of risk and return. To get the most out of your investment, you’ll need to shop around for the right product.

It helps to ask the right people; personal finance blogger Fitz Villafuerte refers all such questions to his broker. “I always tell them, I’m not a stock market expert, so I’m not going to give you stock market advice. Go to Citisec online, they’re my stockbroker, and they offer free stock market investing seminars.”

Investing in businesses requires greater amounts of capital, know-how, and appetite for risk. Entrepreneurship carries with it a large potential for failure—“for the majority who are not truly prepared, their attempt to go into business, more likely, will fail,” says Colayco. For starter entrepreneurs, Colayco suggests buying a franchise instead.

“The advantage of getting a franchise is you minimize the risks involved in doing business,” explains Colayco. “[It’s] also one of the best ways to learn how to manage or run a particular business. When you buy a franchise you are also buying the opportunity to learn the whole business process, from sourcing of supplies to managing inventory and handling people, among other things.”

For starter tips on buying a franchise, read "Questions to ask before buying a red-hot franchise
Investing in property requires the largest amounts of capital, and is the least liquid option among the ones listed here. “Look at your house as a good short-term investment only if you are able to buy it below the market value,” writes Armando Ang, author of Tips and Traps when Buying or Building a Home. “If you buy at the market rate, then your costs of buying and selling will almost always end in a loss on the deal.”
Investment in property has one shining upside: its value tends to appreciate over time. “It is a passive investment that increases in value by allowing market forces to work for you without sweat,” says Ang. “It’s a tangible asset that can grow in value as time passes by. It also serves both for shelter and an investment for future generations.”
