MANILA, Philippines – Miss World 2011 bet Gwendoline Ruais guns for a semi-final spot as she lands on three “fast track competitions” in the pageant.
Since 2003, Miss World pageant has been featuring fast track events during the preliminary round of the competition, which give a bit of a boost to some of the contestants when the semi-finalists are chosen on coronation night.
In these fast track events, 20 contestants are chosen per category and, as “Unang Hirit” reported on Nov. 4, Ruais made it into three the Top 20 of following categories: Beach Beauty (2003–present), Beauty With A Purpose (2005–present), and Top Model (2004, but not held in 2005-2006).
The Beach Beauty category is a swimsuit competition and the Top Model is, of course, a modeling tilt, while the Beauty With A Purpose (formerly known as Miss World Scholarship) awards the contestant with the most relevant and important charity project in her nation.
While other fast track categories have been introduced since, namely the People's Choice (2003), Personality (2003) and Contestant's Choice (2004), the only other categories still being competed for this year are Miss Talent (2003–present), Miss Sports (2003–present).
Joining Ruais on the Top 20 Beach Beauty qualifiers are Miss Bolivia Yohanna Guzman, Miss Brazil Juceila Bueno, Miss England Alize Mounter, Miss Italy Tania Bambaci, Miss Korea Kyung Doe, Miss Kazakhstan Zhanna Zhumaliyeva, Miss Martinique Axelle Perrier, Miss New Zealand Mainete Broekman, Miss Paraguay Nicole Vera, Miss Northern Ireland Finola Ginname.
The others who made it into the Beach Beauty category were Miss Puerto Rico Amanda Perez, Miss Russia Natalia Nantigurova, Miss Serbia Milica Tepavac, Miss Spain Carla Garcia Barber, Miss St. Barthelemy Johanna Sansano, Miss Sweden Nicoline Artursso, Miss Ukraine Iaroslava Kuriacha, Miss Venezuela Ivian Sarcos, and Miss Zimbabwe Malaika Mshandu.
While Ruais got into three fast track categories, other Miss World contestants with Filipino blood sadly didn’t fare as well in the Beach Beauty class. They were former “Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity 2” edition contestant Riza Santos for Canada and Maya Celeste Olesen for Denmark.
Should Ruais be fortunate enough to bag the crown, she will be the first Filipina to hold the title in the pageant’s 60 year history.
The Miss World 2011 coronation night will be held Nov. 6 (UK time) in Earls Court, London.
