There are exotic places that one can tour in various parts of the world, but a trip to the coastal town of Mombasa Kenya is one you will remember for the rest of your life. Mombasa is a beautiful sunny tropical island with white sandy beaches and inviting warm waters alive with all manner of marine life. There are plenty of fascinating activities on the beaches and on the mainland, where there are several towns that are both cosmopolitan and deeply steeped in the coastal culture and history.
The Mombasa Kenya beaches such as Nyali, Bamburi, Mtwapa, Tiwi, and Diani have world-class resorts and guesthouses that offer excellent accommodation and cuisine. Here you can relax in the deserted beaches away from the outside world. The extensive and spectacular coral reefs hold rare species of aquatic animal and plant life and can be explored by scuba diving and snorkeling. For those not keen on diving one can still view the reefs in a ride on a boat with a transparent glass floor. The warm and calm open waters make this an ideal place for beginners to take diving lessons from the licensed operators on site. The MV Dania, which sunk in 2002 off the Nyali Beach, is famed for wreck dives. You can also visit Wasini where there is a marine national park to see the green turtles, dolphins, the whale shark and countless types of beautiful fish.
The wide mouth of the coastal waters at Kilifi Creek makes Mombasa an ideal place for sailing and there are yachts as well as trained crew available for hire. There are other types of boats available for charter such as kayaks and skiffs, which can be used to explore some of the remote caves and bays like the mangrove forests that are partially underwater.
There are many places to see on the mainland of Mombasa Kenya. At Kongo on the South Coast, you can visit Mwana Mosque, which dates back to the 15th century and is still used for prayer. You can also tour some sites that are linked to the Indian Ocean slave trade such as Jumba la Mtwana and the mysterious Shimoni Caves that are believed to have been holding bases for slaves before they were put in ships to be sailed off to other continents and slave markets. Further inland one encounters the Mijikenda tribes who still hold on to their cultural heritage.
The Mombasa beaches are now one of the places where you can have a private beach wedding surrounded by your loved ones and is also a perfect getaway for a honeymoon. The towns have many modern services including theaters, casinos and even an international airport where you can fly in directly to Mombasa Kenya.
