Golgatha: The Word Symbolizes A Beautiful Reality!

Golgatha: The Word Symbolizes A Beautiful Reality!

David & the Head of Goliath of Gath

In the Gospels we read that our Lord Jesus Christ was crucified for our sins at a place called "Golgotha."

“And they came to the place that is called Golgotha, which is the place of skull.” (Matthew 27:33)

So Golgotha is the "place of the skull." But if you've ever studied Hebrew, you may have realized a difficulty with the Bible's claim. Golgotha doesn't mean anything close to "skull" in Hebrew, Aramaic, or any other language. It's a big problem.

So we have to solve this puzzle. When we do solve it, you're going to be amazed.

Let's lay out the facts:
  1. Golgotha, a seemingly unintelligible word, has something to do with a "skull."
  2. Golgotha is located outside the city walls of Jerusalem.
  3. Golgotha was a widely known Jewish location with a proper name. Presumably the location symbolized something.
Here's a possible solution that you may not have expected:

The "place of the skull" is where King David buried the head of the decapitated giant Goliath of Gath. The Bible teaches that after David slew Goliath, he cut off his head and brought it the skull to Jerusalem:

“He ran, and stood over the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath, and slew him, and cut off his head. And the Philistines seeing that their champion was dead, fled away. And the children of Israel returning, after they had pursued the Philistines, fell upon their camp. And David taking the head of the Philistine, brought it to Jerusalem: but his armour he put in his tent.” (1 Samuel 17:51–54, D-R)

This would explain why the "place of the skull" is oddly named "Golgotha." The term is a corruption of Hebrew for "Goliath Gath":

Goliath Gath > GoliGath > GolGath > GolGatha

So King David killed the enemy of Israel (Goliath of Gath) and then brought the giant's head to Jerusalem. Jews would not have permitted the Gentile giant's head to be buried in the city walls. It would have been buried outside the city walls. This matches with what we know about the location of Golgatha. It was outside the city walls.

The slaying of Goliath by David was one of the most important events in "Israelite history." The location of the giant's head would have been known by all. Hence, "Golgatha" is likely the the place of not just any old skull, but the place of the skull of Goliath of Gath.

This is a beautiful connection since Christ is the Messianic Son of David. Our Lord Jesus Christ is constantly reaffirming that He Himself is the definitive "Son of David":

“And the chief priests and scribes, seeing the wonderful things that he did and the children crying in the temple and saying: Hosanna to the son of David, were moved with indignation,” (Matthew 21:15, D-R)

“And Jesus answering, said, teaching in the temple: How do the scribes say that Christ is the son of David?” (Mark 12:35, D-R)

Our Lord Jesus Christ crushed the head of Satan while he was on the cross (see Gen 3:15).

Just as the shepherd David crushed the head of Goliath of Gath with a little stone, so Jesus Christ crushed the head of Satan. The foundation of God's Kingdom on earth (the Catholic Church) was embedded into the forehead of the Roman Empire while Jesus hung on a Roman cross. The "little rock" that Christ threw was his appointed apostle and vicar - a man whom he named "little rock" or "Peter."Peter was embedded into Rome by also being crucified on a Roman cross, albeit upside down. And there Peter was buried: "On this rock I will build my Church."

Camayan Beach Resort: Touring the Grounds

Just recently, I and some other When In Manila blogger friends were invited to come over toCamayan Beach Resort. To be honest, I have heard of the resort’s name from radio commercials quite a few times… Although my thoughts of Camayan Beach Resort was: “It’s just a simple resort that catered a pool on some extra amenities…”, I was still curious on how the resort really looks likeAnd so after our stay-cation there, I realized, I WAS DEAD WRONG.

We set-off heading to the resort at around 11am and arrived roughly around 1pm with some stop-overs. Upon arriving, I already set sight on the beach and was surprised to see so many equipment for rent, I was then sure that this quick vacation was going to be fun and exciting!

We were welcomed by Mrs. KC Simpson and escorted at the resort’s reception area. While waiting for our rooms to be ready, we didn’t waste any time and started touring the Camayan Beach Resort grounds.

Welcome to Camayan Beach Resort!

We first headed around the restaurant that was by the beach side–The Reef. Some activities like the billiards table, the karaoke room and function rooms were virtually beside the restaurant, which I guess really ignited activities at night in this area.

Camayan Beach Resort houses 44 Superior Rooms38 Deluxe Rooms and 3 Spacious Suites. Breaching the rooms, I was astonished at how well-furnished each room was. I’ve been to a number of well known and expensive beach resorts, and I can say that Camayan Beach Resort might just be the most ”bang for the buck” resort in the aspect of the rooms. Definitely well worth it!

Camayan Beach Resort Superior Rooms

Both Superior and Deluxe rooms had well ambient lighting that matched that wood/mustard reflection of the colors. The ceiling had good height and have wood weaving designs that gave the room a much bigger feel. I loved the rear balcony type doors and semi-outdoor lounge of each Deluxe Room.

I swear, even if I just stayed inside our room, I would definitely have proper relaxation to fulfill my vacation. Camayan Beach Resort also has their in-house SPA that can do room services with prior reservations. Or you can go to their SPA room and have yourself pampered there!

I would really love to have myself pampered; but then, the beach was already calling out our names.
Touring the Camayan Beach Resort grounds, I really didn’t expect the place to be so clean and so relaxing. It has this aura that is very welcoming and very “cool & calm”. The resort really felt like how a “true” resort should feel, retaining its youthful sight and relaxing aura.

Islam & Being Ecumenically Correct: How It's Driven One Ex-Muslim to Leave the Catholic Church

Islam & Being Ecumenically Correct: How It's Driven One Ex-Muslim to Leave the Catholic Church

Mr. Magdi Cristiano Allam
Receiving Communion after Baptism
He has now left the Catholic Church...

I was really impressed a few years back when Pope Benedict baptized a Muslim man. His name is Magdi Cristiano Allam. I thought it was great that the Pope himself would baptize such a convert. It symbolized that Christ is truly the King of Kings and Lord of the whole earth.

Well, Mr. Allam just announced that he is leaving the Catholic Church! That's it. He's done. He's out.

Why?

Magdi Cristiano Allam is leaving the Catholic Church because he thinks the Catholic Church has become soft on Islam. And to be honest, I agree with his assessment of the Vatican's "soft-theology" of Islam.

The new "soft theology" of contemporary Catholic dialogue is not historic, biblical, traditional, Thomistic, etc. We all see it for what it is. The Holy See's increasingly tolerant stance toward Islam is an attempt to appease the future rulers of Europe: Muslims. This approach is not the way of Saint Pius V, to be sure. Google "Battle of Lepanto" for details.

Here is Mr. Allam in his own words:

"The thing that drove me away from the Church more than any other factor was religious relativism, in particular the legitimisation of Islam as a true religion," he said. Mr Allam said Islam was "an intrinsically violent ideology" that had to be courageously opposed as "incompatible with our civilisation and fundamental human rights". "I am more convinced than ever that Europe will end up being subjugated to Islam just like what happened beginning in the seventh century on the other side of the Mediterranean," he warned. {Quote from the Tablet}
I don't agree with Mr. Allam for leaving the one true Church of Jesus Christ. I don't celebrate it or condone it.The apostasy of Mr Allam serves the dead canary in the mine.

We will not convert Muslims to our Lord Jesus Christ if we keep preaching our "ecumenically correct" (EC) public service announcements.Islam is NOT a religion of Abraham. It's not. It's an aberration.  Saint John Damascene (Doctor of the Catholic Church) said that Islam is a heresy at best. If Abraham were alive today, he would stand up and curse Islam. It's a religion of the sword. Always has been. Always will be. Any religion that promises sex with virgins as its highest reward is clearly a religion created by man. Mohammedanism does not have a divine origin. Mohammedanism leads people away from Jesus Christ.

"But Dr. Marshall. You don't really understand. I mean have you ever really read the Quran?" Yes, I have the full audible version of the Quran on my iPhone and I listen to it. I read it. I study it. It's bad news.

Think about it this way. The Catholic Church, once upon a time, converted the nations of Europe. These converts had previously practiced forms of paganism and animism.

What if the Pope and bishops back then began glad-handing with the ecumenical heads of the religions they were supposed to be baptizing? What if Pope Gregory the Great were celebrating diversity with the priests of Thor and priestesses of the Frigga? Do you know how discouraging that would be for these new converts among the freshly baptized German tribes?!

I'm going to be transparent with you. It absolutely destroys me whenever I see photos of the Pope and the Archbishop of Canterbury posing for pictures. Many former Anglican priests made enormous sacrifices to enter into communion with the Pope. I gave up my life and vocation as an Anglican priest to be in communion with the Pope. To see the Pope smiling and celebrating with our "old boss" is very discouraging.

My opinion is that the ecumenism of the last 40 years does more harm than good - when it comes to people who are actually becoming Catholic.Magdi Cristiano Allam is Exhibit A. Here is a man who was baptized by the Pope himself. Now he is gone. How sad.

Now it's your turn. We can agree that there is no excuse to leave the Church, but is the Catholic Church hurting her children who are former Muslim children by being ecumenically correct and overly tolerant? Is this about Christ or COEXIST? Please leave a comment.

WARNING New ATM Scam: ATM Card Skimming Device

 By  on March 15, 2013

WARNING TO ALL ATM USERS! THIS HAPPENED TO ME PERSONALLY JUST 2 WEEKS AGO! MY WHOLE SAVINGS WAS WIPED OUT BECAUSE OF AN ATM SKIMMING DEVICE!

atm_pin_number

Yesterday afternoon, March 12, 2013, I logged on to my online banking and discovered that my savings account was zeroed out. When I saw the 0.00 balance, I couldn’t believe it. I immediately looked at the transaction history. To my surprise, I discovered several consecutive ATM withdrawals of P20,000-25,000 each over a period of 2 days, until my funds were completely wiped out. I thought to myself:
That’s impossible because I never made any withdrawals since I was going to use this to pay for my son’s tuition, and that’s weird because I have my ATM card with me, it has always been in my wallet and I NEVER LOST IT. I see it everyday whenever I open my wallet.”
That’s when I rushed to the phone and called the bank to inform them of what happened (thanks so much to my old friends back in my bank where I used to work). We looked through my transaction history and they asked me to identify the last withdrawal that I remember making. It was the withdrawal I made last Feb 23, 2013, done in an ATM terminal in the Venice Piazza, McKinley Hill. The subsequent withdrawals after that were ALL fraudulent. They were all done just a few seconds apart, over a period of 2 days (from March 2 at past 9pm and March 3 at past 5pm). I have reported this to my bank, and to the ATM’s bank so that they can check on this particular terminal. I’m assuming it’s this one that compromised my card because it’s the only ATM machine I’ve used that’s out of the ordinary. But I may be wrong.
I gave the banks the exact time and date of all transactions so they can check their cctv. Can you imagine, I withdrew on that machine last Feb 23 and I only reported it yesterday, March 12, that the machine has been compromised. How many people have used that machine in a span of 17 days??? These syndicates have probably robbed millions!
Moral of the story is — never ever use an ATM machine that is not inside bank premises!!!!
I’ve been a banker for the past 7 years of my life and have always been careful with the ATM machines that I use. I always check the machine before using it, to see if there’s any suspicious looking device attached to it. In this case, the terminal looked absolutely normal. I usually only withdraw inside the bank where I work, but for this one instance I had to withdraw in a stand-alone machine inside a mall, and look what happened. All my money for my son’s tuition wiped out in a snap. I’m still in shock, and still find it so ironic that it happened to me, when I’m the one who always cautions my family as to what ATM machine to use. I used to just see this on TV, but never thought it could ever happen to me. Please be vigilant, and please listen to my advice if you don’t want your hard earned money and life savings wiped out in a snap. NEVER USE ATM MACHINES OUTSIDE BANK PREMISES. Don’t be fooled by malls saying they have top security. This is Venice Piazza for Pete’s sake! A high end mall! And this has been happening right under their nose! I can honestly tell you, after this, I AM NEVER USING AN ATM MACHINE OUTSIDE THE BANK EVER AGAIN. I may even just go back to the old-fashioned way of transacting through the teller. Please share to your family, friends and loved ones.

Below are a couple of forms of ATM Skimming Devices / Cameras to capture your ATM Cards and Pin Numbers. Do note that there are surely more kinds of these devices not known yet and thus, you just need to be careful.

20 Fun Facts about Papal Elections in Church History

20 Fun Facts about Papal Elections in Church History

Today begins the Papal Conclave to elect our new Pope. I was reading up on the history of Papal conclaves and distilled for you twenty interesting facts. Here they are. Feel free to use them at your next cocktail party:

1. How was a Pope elected in the early Church?Originally, the Pope was elected by the local bishops surrounding Rome, by the clergy of Rome, and by "good men" of Rome. Saint Cyprian, writing about the election of Pope Cornelius, lists these three groups (Ep. IV ad Anton., n. 8) as the original body of electors in the third century, long before the office of cardinal was created. Obviously, this loose form of election allowed for some confusion and the production of anti-popes.

2. Could an Emperor "Veto" a Papal Election? In AD 533, Pope John II formally recognised the right of the Ostrogothic kings to ratify papal elections. This right passed to the Holy Roman Emperors and then to the Austrian Emperor. This so-called "Imperial Veto" was exercised by the Hungarian king as late as 1903 against the election of Mariano Rampolla. When Rampolla was vetoed after a lawful election, the conclave selected Giuseppe Sarto - Saint Pius X! Pope Pius X immediately outlawed  the "Imperial Veto" for the future.

3. What about laymen? In AD 789, noblemen (prominent Roman laymen) were excluded from the vote. However, Pope Nicholas restored votes to noblemen in AD 862.

4. When did the college of cardinals come into existence? In AD 1059, only the Roman cardinals (in Latin "hinge" clergy) elected the Pope. The cardinals included the bishops of six local dioceses around Rome (cardinal bishops) and the clergy of Rome (cardinal priests and cardinal deacons). The titles and hierarchy of the cardinals still hearken back to this arrangement, even though today's cardinals represent various nationalities.

5. Are the cardinals ranked by power? In the 11th century, the cardinal bishops would create a list of candidates and then the rest of the cardinals would join in the vote. This gave special power to the cardinal bishops. This is no longer the case. All cardinals have one vote and vote together in common.

6. Did the people have a say? In AD 1139, the Pope removed the previously required "assent of the people" at the institution of a new Pope. Previously, if the people cheered, it was good. If they rioted, no so good.

7. Just a few cardinals can do the job. There were only seven cardinals in existence when Pope Alexander IV was elected!

8. What kind of majority is required to elect the Pope? According to an old decree of AD 1179, a 2/3 majority is required to elect the Pope. In the case of Alexander IV who elected by a conclave of only seven cardinals, five cardinals would have sufficed for a 2/3 majority. Later on, Pope John Paul II's constitution allowed election by absolute majority if deadlock prevailed after thirty three or thirty four ballots.

9. The meaning of the term "conclave." Due to delays in electing Popes, in AD 1274 it was decreed that the cardinals should be LOCKED UP until they elected a Pope. This is the meaning of "conclavis" which basically mean "locked up with a key."

10. A two year conclave! The longest conclave lasted for two years from AD 1314 till 1316 during the Avignon Papacy.

11. The Pope acting like Moses. In 1587, Pope Sixtus V restricted the number of cardinals to 70, following the precedent of Moses who appointed 70 elders (6 cardinal bishops, 50 cardinal priests, and 14 cardinal deacons). Pope John XXIII began to expand the number and Pope Paul VI increased the limit to 120! There will be 115 cardinal voters in this election, even though there are many more cardinals above the voting age, which brings us to...

12. How old can cardinal electors be? Pope Paul VI in 1970 said that cardinals could only vote if under the age of 80.

13. Does the Pope have to be a cardinal? Pope Urban VI in 1378 was the last pope elected from outside the College of Cardinals.

14. Does he have to be a priest? The last person elected as Pope who was not already a priest was Pope Leo X in 1513.

15. Does the cardinal need to be present to be elected? No. Pope Adrian VI was elected cardinal while he was absent from the conclave! Surprise!

16. Women? Women cannot be elected Pope since they cannot be priests or bishops. However, there is a false legend about "Pope Joan."

17. Can a cardinal reject his election? Yes, a cardinal can be validly elected, but refuse the Papal office. He only becomes Pope when he assents.

18. When does a Pope choose his name? If the elected cardinal assents to the election, the Dean of the Cardinals asks, "Quo nomine vis vocari? The cardinal then announces his new name.

19. What about the famous proclamation? When the Pope is announced to the world, the Church uses this traditional template:

Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum:
Habemus Papam!
Eminentissimum ac Reverendissimum Dominum,
Dominum [forename],
Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae Cardinalem [surname],
qui sibi nomen imposuit [papal name].

"I announce to you a great joy:
We have a Pope!
The Most Eminent and Most Reverend Lord,
Lord [forename],
Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church [surname],
who takes to himself the name [papal name]."

20. What is the first thing a new Pope does? The new pope begins his pontificate by giving his first apostolic blessing, Urbi et Orbi ("to the City and to the World"). An indulgence is attached to hearing this blessing, even through the radio or TV.
