Sugar is sweet my love.........................but not as sweet as you.

The title above is part of a 60's or 70's song which was so popular during those times when sugar is really dirt cheap. But now many families can't even afford to buy a kilo of the said product. So, ingenious sari-sari store owners have resorted to selling repacked sugar in 1/2 k, 1/4 k, and even 1 peso pack.

But why is the price of sugar going up, even if they know that it is harmful to their health? Masarap kasi eh. Bahala na kung ano ang mangyari, basta hindi masarap ang pagkain o inumin kung walang asukal.

So we will try to study or learn something about how sugar affects our health and wealth.

Here is a study taken from www.nancyappleton.com

* Sugar can suppress the immune system.
* Sugar can upset the body's mineral balance.
* Sugar can contribute to hyperactivity, anxiety, depression, concentration difficulties, and crankiness in children.
* Sugar can produce a significant rise in triglycerides.

* Sugar can increase the risk of coronary heart disease.
* Sugar may lead to chromium deficiency.

* Sugar can cause copper deficiency.
* Sugar interferes with absorption of calcium and magnesium.
* Sugar can increase fasting levels of blood glucose.
* Sugar can promote tooth decay.

* Sugar can produce an acidic stomach.
* Sugar can raise adrenaline levels in children.
* Sugar can lead to periodontal disease.
* Sugar can speed the aging process, causing wrinkles and grey hair.

* Sugar can increase total cholesterol.
* Sugar can contribute to weight gain and obesity.
* High intake of sugar increases the risk of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
* Sugar can contribute to diabetes.

* Sugar can contribute to osteoporosis.
* Sugar can cause a decrease in insulin sensitivity.
* Sugar leads to decreased glucose tolerance.
* Sugar can cause cardiovascular disease.

* Sugar can increase systolic blood pressure.

* Sugar can cause toxemia during pregnancy.

* Sugar can contribute to eczema in children.
* Sugar can overstress the pancreas, causing damage.
* Sugar can cause atherosclerosis.
* Sugar can compromise the lining of the capillaries.

* Sugar can cause liver cells to divide, increasing the size of the liver.
* Sugar can increase the amount of fat in the liver.
* Sugar can increase kidney size and produce pathological changes in the kidney.
* Sugar can cause depression.

* Sugar can increase the body's fluid retention.
* Sugar can cause hormonal imbalance.
* Sugar can cause hypertension.
* Sugar can cause headaches, including migraines.

* Sugar can cause an increase in delta, alpha and theta brain waves, which can alter the mind's ability to think clearly.
* Sugar can increase blood platelet adhesiveness which increases risk of blood clots and strokes.
* Sugar can increase insulin responses in those consuming high-sugar diets compared to low sugar diets.
* Sugar increases bacterial fermentation in the colon.

Sugar and cancer

Of the over 4 million cancer patients being treated in the U.S. today, almost none are offered any scientifically guided nutrition therapy other than being told to "just eat good foods." Many cancer patients would have a major improvement in their conditions if they controlled the supply of cancer's preferred fuel: GLUCOSE.

By slowing the cancer's growth, patients make it possible for their immune systems to catch up to the disease. Controlling one's blood-glucose levels through diet, exercise, supplements, meditation and prescription drugs - when necessary - can be one of the most crucial components to a cancer treatment program. The saying "Sugar feeds cancer" is simple. The explanation is a little more involved.

German Otto Warburg, Ph.D., the 1931 Nobel laureate in medicine, first discovered that cancer cells have a fundamentally different energy metabolism compared to healthy cells. The gist of his Nobel thesis was this: malignant tumors frequently exhibit an increase in "anaerobic glycolysis" - a process whereby glucose is used by cancer cells as a fuel with lactic acid as an anaerobic by-product - compared to normal tissues.(1) The large amount of lactic acid produced by this fermentation of glucose from the cancer cells is then transported to the liver. This conversion of glucose to lactate creates a lower, more acidic PH in cancerous tissues as well as overall physical fatigue from lactic acid build-up.(2,3) Therefore, larger tumors tend to exhibit a more acidic PH.(4) anaerobic glycolysis.

Hence, cancer therapies should attempt to regulate blood-glucose levels through diet, supplements, exercise, medication when necessary, gradual weight loss and stress reduction. Since cancer cells derive most of their energy from anaerobic glycolysis, the goal is not to eliminate sugars or carbohydrates entirely from the diet but rather to control blood-glucose within a narrow range to help starve the cancer cells and boost immune function.

Karon, unsa may imo huna huna. Hinay hinay sa sugar. Okey?

Inmates star in Jackson’s ‘Drill’

By Georgia R. OsmeƱa
Cebu Daily News

CEBU CITY – (UPDATE) How does one teach 1,500 inmates a new routine and a new dance with various formations in two days?

"With a lot of heart and through the rhythm of the music," said Travis Payne, Michael Jackson's choreographer.

For two days last week, he and two dancers from Jackson's final video “This Is It” were in the Cebu Provincial and Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) to film the inmates dancing to the Drill and the new song, Nobody Cares About Us.”

A version of it was uploaded last night on YouTube. The dance is supposed to be premiered today, Jan. 26, on CNN worldwide with Payne to be interviewed by Anderson Cooper.

My friend Fritz Friedman e-mailed me to say that he was coming to town. He didn't tell me his guests were Payne, Michael Jackson's choreographer for the past 18 years, and two of the dancers from the film. They arrived on Saturday, the day before the Sinulog and stayed at the Waterfront Hotel.

“Georgia, I’m here with the choreographer of Michael Jackson. Would you be interested to watch him teach the inmates of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center?" Fritz asked me on the phone.

Of course, I said, YES, YES, YES, and put on hold all other schedules for Monday and Tuesday. Over dinner, Travis told me that whenever Michael Jackson had time, he would access the Internet and watch the dances of the Cebu provincial inmates on YouTube.

He would literally run around the room smiling and giggling. It made him happy to watch the inmates dance to his music. Sony Entertainment undertook the project. (Friedman happens to be the senior vice president.) They flew in Travis and Dres. Abaracadabra Productions was given the exclusive assignment to film it. ABS-CBN was given the exclusive rights to report it in the Philippines.

Copies of the dance routine were sent ahead. Gwen Lador, the in-house choreographer of the CPDRC, worked on the routine with the inmates. Byron Garcia, the warden and inspiring force behind the prison supervised the preparations.

When Ross Misa, the director of Abracadabra productions, first approached Byron about this project, Byron didn't believe Ross.

Rehearsals started on a Monday. The inmates were polite, respectful, and very disciplined. They were cooperative and eager to learn the dance. This went on the whole day nonstop under the heat of the sun in the quadrangle of the compound. Coffee and snacks were served.

Travis broke them up into groups. A specific group was assigned to each area practicing the same routine. They would all come together later for the bigger formation. Fritz,Stacey,Travis, the other dancers, the production crew, Ernest Escaler and Dondon Monteverede, Ross Misa, the guards, Byron, his family – we all would mix freely with the inmates.

Karen Davila was given the assignment to interview them for ABS-CBN. They were strict. No one was allowed to video the rehearsals.

I felt we were in a studio lot of Sony Pictures in Culver City, California. It was hard to believe that we were in Kalunasan,Cebu City with the dancing stars and the dancing inmates. Towards the end of Monday afternoon, the inmates gave an impromptu presentation of “Ben”. This came as a complete surprise to Travis and brought him to tears. He used his shirt to dry his face.

The inmates performed all their songs, including, "We are the World" surprising everyone with the display of flags(where did they keep them?)This made Ernest Escaler cry and slowly the guests were misty eyed.

CPRDC Inmates on the move again......now with Michael Jackson's "THIS IS IT"

As a Bisaya we should be really proud of the achievements being generated by our CPRDC inmates in Cebu City. They are not only popular in You Tube. They will now be in DVD's and BLU-Ray disc after the music of the supposed last performance of Michael Jackson called "This Is It" is released. Definitely the dancing prowess of the CPRDC inmates will be included in one of the musical track of the most awaited last performance of the said artist.

JR Bahalina ............the pride of Leyte

It has been a year since I started selling bahalina , after I have retired in December 2007............., a local red wine available in Leyte. It was my observation and experience that JR excels than the other brands existing in our place.

But it doesn't mean that no other brands can compare with JR because there are so many others that need to be discovered and promoted. And beside the problem of availability will always crop up.
Many are so small scale that commercial orders are not possible nor available.

But with JR, I will assure you that I will be able to send to you whatever the quantity is, as long as you will be able to taste again the local red wine you are longing for.

JR Bahalina is available in three sizes: 6 liters at P200.00 per bottle or P800.00/carton, 4 liters at P140.00 per bottle or P560.00/carton and 1.5 liters at P55.00 per bottle or P660.00/carton.

Not included in the pricing is the shipping cost that will still be determined after the available courier or transport company have agreed to whatever terms they have decided to accept or require.

Calanggaman Island.......of Palompon, Leyte, Philippines

I was watching Eat Bulaga 23rd of January 2010 when suddenly Kalanggaman Island was mentioned by a participant named Lena Santos aka "Pauleen Luna" in the KSP edition "Super Sireyna" .

The question posed by the juror was "We know that the Philippines is composed of 7,107 islands and many of those islands are comparable in beauty with other islands located in other parts of the world, what do you think is the most beautiful island that can be compared if not better than the others and why?"

I am expecting her to say Boracay or El Nido or Samal Island but when "she" answered "Kalanggaman Island" I know that there is no other island except our very own island, because even if she said near Mactan Island I am sure that she is talking about the island owned by Palompon town in Leyte, Phiilippines.

Though Lena Santos did not win, I am still proud of her because as she said, she is well traveled and she thinks that the most beautiful island is our very own Kalanggaman Island.

Can't our local government unit do something about the obscurity of the said island and promote it with much vigor and enthusiasm for the benefit and priority not only of our local constituents but others as well.

Okay, Mayor Yoly Tupa?

Sinulog.........Pit Senor...............the talk of the town

The month of January is a month celebrated not only in Palompon but all over the Philippines. The Philippines is somewhat lucky to be a center of devotion to the child Jesus. But of all places, it is in Cebu City wherein the biggest and grandiose celebration is being held every third Sunday of January every year.

There are several categories considered for participating contingents such as Free Interpretation with 22 participants, Sinulog Based, Higantes and Puppeteers, Floats

One of the earliest guest contingent to perform is the Municipality of Tabuelan of Cebu where they presented their "Ani-anihan Festival" starring with principal dancer Gov. Gwen Garcia.

While the town of Alegria also of Cebu presented a performance based on the dangers of global warming under the free interpretation category, while the Kabataan sa Tisa (SB-10) gave their sinulog based performance with much pomp and vigor.

Sinulog sa Kabataan of the province, first place winner of which is the city of Lapu-lapu represented by Pajo Elementary School and was followed by the fifth place winner Labangon Elementary School in a free interpretation performance.

Sex Bomb Dancers...........with the CPDRC Inmates

It was a beautiful morning and the "Sinulog" fever is on the air. And today January 15, 2010 is also a special day, not only for the CPDRC inmates, made famous by YouTube, but the COMELEC and the GMA family who are the main sponsors of the touring Sex Bomb dancers in conjunction with the celebration of the sinulog this year.

If you are not yet aware, the GMA Channel 7 is the main sponsor of an advocacy about the importance of the coming elections, particularly the first automated elections ever held where the old practice of "dayaan" is supposed to be eliminated or avoided.

After showing their dancing prowess at the CPDRC quadrangle at Cebu City, the queen city of the south, they proceeded to Brgy. Sambag I and Southwestern University Auditorium in Urgello St., Sambag I, Cebu City. They joined the kids of Sambag I in a dancing contest participated by so many children from the said baranggay

Lou Bega.....................he loves to sing

In an impromptu singing session, Lou did not take long to sing his national anthem, Angelina and Mambo No. 5 which is available in our videoke machine.

He sang very well that Jenny, his wife joined in the singing from time to time to be his backup singer.

After the singing session Lou asked to bring the videoke machine to San Miguel on the 23rd of January for a party (despedida maybe) after which they may be flying home to Berlin, Germany days later.

Well everything has to end, so for an hour or two, they have to go some other place to maximize their stay in Palompon, their own sweet Palompon.

Its really sad to part ways, especially with some special friends.

But as they say we have our own lives to attend and take care of. So "aurevoir". "Till we see each other again".

Jenny MarquezTrumper-Bega.........................the wife

One of the things that cannot be handled by husbands with ease is household marketing. A task that can be easily done by housewives whether young or old.

The picture above will tell so many things about the wife of Lou Bega or better still Mrs. Jenny Bega doing some shopping at SM Shopping Mall at Rizal St., Palompon, Leyte.

She is very much at ease and comfortable doing a wife's task of making available their family's needs.

After doing some marketing she asked where she can be connected with the internet to open and read her emails.

I readily offered my laptap connected to Globe broadband which I use daily to read news and read my mails.

And this is my encounter with the more famous David Lou Bega..............the German singer.

More on LOU BEGA...................Mambo No. 5 fame

Today January 13, 2009 at about 3pm, I chanced upon the German singer LOU BEGA of Mambo No. 5 and ANGELINA fame. It was a chance encounter that I would not forget.

He was recently featured in Balitang Bisdak of Channel 7 Cebu, so I won't forget that particular face. His facial features which is brown (dark or light) are very similar to Filipinos color.

He's so guwapo and more or less 6 feet tall and so friendly and charming that you'll forget that you're a man, but a gay. "Mabayot" ka kung matapad ka niya".

Kaya lang, wala na tayong pag-asa kay he is very much happily married to a native but mestiza girl (half pinay/german) but now an immigrant to Berlin, Germany.

She is no other than Geneva (Jenny) Marquez Trumper of San Miguel, Palompon, Leyte.

Her mother is Ms. Erlinda Marquez married to Mr. Kurt Trumper and now living at The Netherlands.

David Lou Bega.......................of Angelina and Mambo No. 5 fame, in Palompon

It was pure luck and love for Hispanic music that made me look for a second time to the man being interviewed by Channel 7 crew in a wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Daryl Ruales held at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral and reception at a high end restaurant in Cebu City last January 8, 2009.

Further recollection reveals that I saw that particular man in our very own Palompon Parish Church grounds several days ago wearing a plain but luminous light green short, a color so popular with some young people who loves music, whether its R and B, reggae, country or whatever.

I am talking about a man named DAVID LOU BEGA, who made popular (revived) the music titled ANGELINA (My Sweet Senorina), MAMBO No. 5, among others. Here's some facts about him and his records............

"Mambo No. 5" is a mambo and jive dance song originally recorded and composed by PĆ©rez Prado in 1949.

The song's popularity was renewed by Lou Bega's and more recently Alesha Dixon's sampling of the original, released under the same name on Bega's debut album A Little Bit of Mambo.

Lou Bega singles chronology
"Mambo No. 5"
(1999) "I Got a Girl"

Bega's cover was a hit in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia, where it reached #1 in 1999. It stayed at #1 in Australia for eight weeks, ultimately becoming the best-selling single of the year. It also topped almost every chart in continental Europe, including Bega's home country, Germany, and set a record by staying at number one in France for 20 weeks (longer than any stay at the top spot ever on the US or UK charts), and the song reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US on November 2, 1999 (after reaching the Top 40 on August 24).

In turn, many artists covered variations of Lou Bega's version including Radio Disney and Bob the Builder. It was also used as the theme for Channel 4's cricket coverage.

The following is a list of names mentioned in Lou Bega's song: Angela, Pamela, Sandra, Rita, Monica, Erica, Rita (again), Tina, Sandra (again), Mary, Jessica.

The music video, directed by Jorn Heitmann, features Lou Bega singing and dancing with flappers, possibly a homage to the music of the 1920s and 1930s. Clips of old-style movies and newsreels showing things such as trumpets and big bands can be seen.

ASL Building................being renovated at Magallanes St.

With the number of construction and repair of new and old buildings, I almost forgot to mention the ASL Building along Magallanes St., which is now nearing completion. The construction several years ago, but was stopped due to ownership and extra judicial partition problems.

Now that construction has resumed, it is presumed that the problem regarding division of the spoils have been settled by the family of the vendors.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In another part of Magallanes St., is a simple but imposing building said to be owned by a the family of the former Erlinda Omega, now married to a British national. They are partly living in both countries, Philippines and England so to speak.

This is what I admire with Palomponganons, they are ready and able to tie the knot with any nationality, black or white, rich or poor, young or old, handsome and beautiful? This is because of the internet and the ability of Filipinos to adjust to whatever culture they face. Don't just make them slaves again, they have already suffered long enough during the Spanish and Japanese colonization, besides Filipinos are easy to please. Don't just step on them cause they might do something you might regret later on.

Palompon reasserts possession, ownership of Calanggaman Island

"Ang Calanggaman Island iya sa Palompon, gasa sa Kahitas-an, alang sa katawhan".
This was the prevailing statement of Mayor Eulogio Tupa after the successful and peaceful repossession of Calanggaman from the armed guards of the beleaguered president of the Legacy group of companies' Celso de los Angeles who claims ownership of the island. (For more stories about this, please read the January-March issue of BUDYONG sa Palompon Vol. 2 issue No. 12)

Computerization hastens business licensing

The Municipality has implemented the computerization program of Business Permit and Licensing Office (BPLO) to speed up the processing of business permits and licenses and improve the collection of local taxes - Annabelle Marquez, BPLO head. (Budyong sa Palompon, Jan.-Mar.'09 issue).

I for one can attest to the fact that there is really a big improvement in the renewal of business permits when it took only about an hour or even less when we submitted our business permit for renewal.........Greg M. Elep, BP # 108 & 109 '2010

This I believe can result only on people cooperating with the local government in getting business permits for their businesses without being afraid of being "hold-up" and taking so much time in following-up some LGU requirements, resulting in more income to the local and national coffers.

Canadians led Hospital repainting

As part of their missionary work, a group of Canadian volunteers came back to Palompon, this time to do repainting jobs for the Manuel B. Veloso Memorial Hospital (MBVMH).

Over 12 volunteers from Vancouver, Canada, headed by philanthropist Ian Ross joined the members of the religious organization Assemblies of God-Palompon in the beautification of the hospital with the intent of of making a more conducive health facility.

With the uplift in physical facilities, I do hope the hospital can also change its image of being a killer hospital, especially to the poor and indigent patients who suffer the brunt of the problems about shortage in medicines, expertise, facilities and so many others things that almost always other families who can afford to bring their patients to Ormoc or Tacloban cities are forced to bring their sick relatives to hospitals in this places to avoid complications that may occur later on.

2010 New and Old Constructions............addendum

With the onset of 2010 one thing is sure, that the construction of new houses and commercial building won't stop. There are so many edifice lined up for construction especially the much publicized New Palompon Social Center to be constructed at the old oval behind the Palompon South Central School.

Budgetary solution of the said building, part of which will come from the sale of the Palompon Social Center at Rizal St., to the Gaisano Group of Companies. I was told that part of the area to be sold will include the areas behind the social center up to the sea.

At left photo is the 50% complete Palompon Legislative Building, a project of Mayor Eulogio Tupa and Congressman Eufrocino Codilla of the 4th District beside the Palompon Municipal Building.

Really, its very important that elected officials try to give to their constituents, projects that they need and deserve without making themselves corrupt in the eyes of the people they serve.

If only those who are in power and in the position to help those whom they are suppose to serve, and will be honest enough to give them what is theirs, then there is no problem when they ask to vote for them again.

New constructions that will usher 2010.........and beyond

The year 2010 as predicted by almost everyone will be a good year..............year of the metal tiger that would usher a robust and prosperous year as compared the past year wherein we saw a year of frustration particularly on big financial institutions and business enterprises whose downfall is unimaginable.

Photo above is the newly completed SFXP plaza complex where anybody, young and old, men or women can spend their own sweet time, day or night and breath a sniff of fresh air while revitalizing their lungs for the day's new start.

Another new contribution to our fast growing business establishments in town is the new building (above photo) on Magallanes St., owner of which are the (Juanito) Asayas family who started their photography business in Tacloban City which is now the biggest photo shop in this town, located in another building at a smaller but significant addition to the towns facade.

In another part of the town is an almost complete building owned by Mr. Harvey Fel Pinon located at Arellano St., Palompon, Leyte.

From the looks of the building, its so massive and concrete that it would easily cost several millions, which an ordinary family would not be able to afford.
Well, there are so many other buildings that can be said to be mushrooming in this part of Northern Leyte. We can say we are not really affected by the recession that hit almost globally particularly the good old USA.
